The dream instrument for protein characterization, we can't be without it in the lab!
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Protein characterization

"In our facility we use all of our Wyatt instruments (the Heleos II and Dawn 8) constantly. The systems are very user friendly and easy to use. We achieve great results and are happy with the outstanding support by Wyatt customer service. Many companies can learn from this kind of service and reaction speed. We recently upgraded our older Heleos II system to the new Dawn 8 and are really happy with the integration. Quick delivery and installation, clear training and a dedicated service to help with all of the questions. We won't be able to imagine our service without the instrument anymore!"

I can whole heartedly recommend the instrument (use with Optilab RI!).
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Protein science

"We are using the DAWN 8 angle detector together with Agilent HPLC and Optilab RI detector. So far, it's been extremely reliable, very reproducible results. I've been measuring more than 200 samples myself and if sample quality was good, the result was as well. Solved a mystery of subunit numbers in a detergent micelle etc."

The instrument is excellent and a useful addition to any protein Biochemistry lab.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Protein and protein complex molecular weight determination

"The instrument is very easy to use and the results are reproducible provided you take care to ensure that you have your sample in exactly the same buffer as that used for the MALS experiment. It enables a faster initial estimation of protein complex stoichiometries than is available by Analytical Ultracentrifugation and it is extremely useful for estimating the oligomeric state of membrane proteins by separating the protein and detergent components. We now routinely use the instrument to assess the oligomeric state and purity of all proteins we work with and we have incorporated it into all our protein purification SOPs."

Works good but would prefer something more simple.
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:Analyze absolute molecular weight distribution of polyethylene samples in a high temperature GPC sys

"The 18 angle LS detector works really well and I am overall pleased with its functionality. However, for this application 18 angles is definitely overkill. It slows down our GPCone software and leaves more opportunities for malfunctions. So far we have not had to make any repairs, but I have heard that making repairs on this system can be very difficult. It would be nice if they made a simpler, easy to repair, 3-6 angle detector for this type of application."

Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Biologics: antigen and antibody characterization.

"If you are still uncertain about the limitations of SEC, well it's time for you to learn about them. There is no protein biophysics without knowledge of molecular mass in solution. That is such a critical and central piece of information to have on your proteins and no instrument out there will give you a better estimate of it than the Heleos. Wyatt customer since 2008, couldn't be happier about the analytical power they provide."

Can't beat light scattering for first principle mass detection especially with glycoproteins.
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:Protein and glycoprotein characterization

"The DAWN HELEOS is a technologically advanced and well-designed light scattering system. When a glycoprotein won't "fly" in mass spec, we use the HELEOS in triple detector mode to characterize the amount of glycosylation. As a first principle method returning mass, it is useful for any all proteins and tight complexes of macromolecules. The Wyatt flow cell and software are an excellent way to implement this method. "

Possibly the best commercial MALS and RI detectors currently available on market.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:polymers in aqueous solutions

"HELEOS is a highly professional and easy to use detector of our AF4 device. The possibility to use it together with a refractive index detector Optilab rEX in a batch/stand-alone mode is an excellent feature. It is really easy to convert HELEOS and Optilab rEX from detectors into high quality scientific devices. We work with thermally responsive polymers and HELEOS with precise temperature control is just great. Importantly, the results are obtained practically instantaneously, especially if compared with goniometer-type instruments. We also receive very quick and professional help from Wyatt services: we are specialists in light scattering but we ask for help in respect to usage of AF4 and software (Astra). For potential customers: LS is a highly informative but difficult method. Wyatt products can do much more than an average user can imagine. In my opinion, a physicist specialized in polymers/particles in solutions should run AF4, HELEOS and Optilab rEX. It is not enough to run an experiment. One should know physical properties of polymers in order to design the experiment correctly. Only then the true value of Wyatt instruments can be appreciated."

a fantastic machine, hope to give a more economical price.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:pharmaceutical research

"The instrument is very useful on the application of pharmaceutical researches, especially large molecular biological products. It has high precision and sensitivity. Presently there is no substitutional production at China market. It has friendly media and is relatively easy to learn how to use. It will be better if the company provide a ready-to-use instruction and same examples of how to utilize the instrument. "

good results, useful and robust instrument
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:detector for Field-Flow Fractionation, nanoparticle analysis

"Instrument can be used by many researchers without major problems. MALS and DLS theory and the opportunities of the instrument could be presented in a more convenient way. Also, the main issues like high baseline noise and contamination could be summarized in a separate application note/ white paper (instead of reading the whole manual). I would appreciate more tutorial videos instead of written documents. "

Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Undergraduate teaching (polysaccharides, proteins)

"We appreciate working with the instrument and our student learn a lot on macromolecules with that. The after sales care has always been perfect. The only thing that we don't fully appreciate is the software Astra 5, it's not really easy for a new person to understand it quickly. "

Excellent results and tremendous customer service even years after purchase. Technical support on fundamentals (and not only equipment trouble-shooting) is excellent.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Water soluble polymer and protein molecular weight characterization

"We have worked with Wyatt Technology multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) equipment for over 15 years. We have used this exclusively for aqueous polymer and biological fluid (equine synovial fluid) characterization in static and GPC-MALLS modes. This has been used by a wide variety of people at various levels of technological acumen. The fundamentals of light scattering may be difficult to learn, but the use of the Wyatt equipment to get good data is relatively easy for a careful experimentalist. I have sent 4 students to the Wyatt Light Scattering University (LSU) and this has been extremely beneficial. The Wyatt technical support has always been outstanding, not only on equipment operation, but also on helping to optimize and understand difficult experiments. Frankly, I would never consider buying polymer molecular characterization equipment from any other company. "

Definitely the best light-scattering detector out there.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:molecular weight determination of various aqueous polymers

"The Heleos II detector is durable and easy to use if one has previous experience with light-scattering instruments. Equilibration of the instrument is fast and it is very easy to switch between solvents. The ability of the instrument to revert to stand-by (idle) mode is particularly useful for running a sequence overnight when no one is around to oversee the experimental run. Maintenance is also easy. "

"The HELEOS provides us with good reproducible results, I think the main issue we have is with our lack of suitable SEC columns for our wide variety of synthetic polymers! Excellent results, no matter what the shape of the protein we get a spot-on MW value
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Protein characterisation

"Excellent results, no matter what the shape of the protein we get a spot-on MW value. One of the most popular techniques in our facility. Researchers now trust the results so much that they can identify ligands bound to proteins that they were not expecting. The courses at Santa Barbara were excellent. Would recommend going as soon as you got the instrument. Because it is so heavily used I would appreciate some sort of maintenance programme just for the confidence that we could get it repaired if anything did go wrong. "

"Since it was the first time for me to do polymer characterization using the Wyatt Optilab (TreX), Dawn Heleos and Viscostar the three days training I attended at Santa-Babra helped a lot in understanding the use of the detectors and better processing of results using the Astra Software. On our CMC samples we currently running we able to get accurate, reproducible and reliable results. Although we still experiencing some difficulties with our Polyacrylamides samples the help we getting from the Wyatt support team have been very helpful and we confident that all our problems will be resolved soon."

Good hardware, but the software could be improved.
Rating: 2.0

  • Application Area:SEC with MALLS, mostly for analysis of synth. rubber, structure & branching analysis

"The technology in the instrument DAWN HELEOS II is properly chose. The signals are clear and the measurement is sensitive. In the other hand the software isn't customer friendly. First the Option for a properly SEC Quality Management doesn’t exist. The creation of a calibration is time/consuming. Another Point is, that the user can’t easily compare the Performance of the column. Overall ASTRA is equipped poorly with SEC Features. Another point is the creation of the molar differential distribution: with a linear calibration curve, there should be a same curve trend as in the RI-curve, e.g. a RI bimodal curve should create a bimodal diff. distribution. The diff. distribution doesn’t fit to the sample and isn't useful. My conclusion is the software should be more user-friendly. The after sales care is better, but most of the times it doesn't happen something after a phone call. It's stressful to call the service again, remind him and describe the problem once again. The value for money is ok. I mean there is an additional benefit. The hardware isn't bad. It's a great technology, but many bugs in the software reduce my satisfaction with the detector system. "

I have used this instrument since 1990, and I cannot live without it.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Analyze nano-to micro-particles, macromolecules including bio and synthetic polymers, and dye, etc .

"I have used this instrument for long time since 1990. I have introduced this instrument to the 3M company, Minnesota in 1990, when I first joined the company. Now I am teaching in a college, and have one in my research laboratory. I am planning to purchase another one as soon as my budget allows. This instrument has been valuable tool for my work at 3M company, and also for my research in college. I am using this instrument as an either on- or offline detector for separation techniques such as field-flow fractionation and chromatography. It can provide important information on macromolecules including the size, molecular weight, molecular density, conformation, and so on. It helped tremendously for me to publish over 100 research papers in various international journals. This instrument is durable and easy to use (it was not that easy in its early development stage^^) "

Overall it works fine but just not for the application I had in mind.
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:protein aggregation

"I do not use a flow cell but rather just a fixed volume. Although the system works well using the scintillation vial I have not had much luck with the low volume cuvette. That is just fuss intensive. "

Review date: 24 Jun 2016 | DAWN®

Manufacturer's Response

Dear Dr. Jameson, Thank you for your favorable review! The vast majority of DAWN HELEOS setups utilize the flow cell in on-line SEC-MALS or FFF-MALS flow mode, CG-MALS stop-flow injection mode or unfractionated flow injection mode. The DAWN’s flow cell provides an ideal optical environment for the most sensitive and robust measurements. However, if your sample is very viscous or sticky, has a tendency to gel or exhibit some other undesirable behavior, and you do not need fractionation for true distribution measurements of molar mass and size, then you are quite right to prefer a disposable scintillation vial and avoid the mess and labor of flow cell cleaning. The low volume quartz cuvette has much better optical quality than the scintillation vial and offers higher sensitivity with 500x lower sample volume, but as you noted it does require ‘fuss’ in the form of cleaning (since you are not going to throw away such a costly accessory). We’re glad we were able to offer a variety of options for the DAWN, one of which met your needs. Sincerely, Wyatt Technology Corp.

This instrument is invaluable in our lab. Wyatt is a great company and helps to make sure we have access to all the knowledge they posses.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Characterization of Polymers for Paint and Coatings Applications

"The MALS along with the Viscostar II and T-rex have given our lab a powerful tool in characterization of unknown polymers. We have been successfully characterizing raw materials, unknowns, and problem batches for our company for over a year now. We now can also get accurate polymer MW and distribution data where before we could only compare to standards (usually a dissimilar polystyrene). The system does require a relatively skilled person to perform analyses, but Wyatt also paid for training! Every time I have needed any help the highly trained Wyatt staff have answered questions very quickly. The support is wonderful."

Excellent for analysis of ADC and other Protein conjugates.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Pegylated protein analysis

"We use it for PEGylated protein analysis. It is a complete system with Agilent SEC and Optilab T-rEX. There is a steep learning curve for understanding the principles and mastering the data processing, however for us this has been one of the most reliable instrument providing accurate data. It has also been quite precise for method development. Extremely high sensitivity and complexity of the instrument make it highly vulnerable to slightest lack of care and maintenance. However, Wyatt service has been extremely helpful with providing useful information on use and maintenance of their products. We have also found the Wyatt online library to be of great help for understanding the applicability of the instrument for applications beyond what we are using it for."

We would be hard-pressed to do without this instrument.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Protein characterization

"We chose the Wyatt MALS/RI instrument for three reasons: the ability to determine the absolute molecular weight of macromolecule, to assess monodispersity or conformational heterogeneity, and to be able to estimate the composition of protein conjugates. This has allowed us to routinely characterize the composition of protein detergent complexes which would otherwise been difficult to assess otherwise. The measurement protocols are easy to follow and greatly simplify protein characterization. Results are presented in an informative manner. "

Quite reliable instrument if well maintained. Wyatt should extend their sources and branch out in the middle east and promptly inform customers in that region of any partnership with local vendors
Rating: 3.7

  • Application Area:Synthetic polymers, proteins

"The system is easy to use and provide reliable results. The challenge with after-sales service is the lack of competent service engineers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for maintenance and service programs. Wyatt should engage a local vendor with trained engineers to assist customers in both preventative and corrective maintenance. Supply of parts and consumables for normal optimum running of equipment should also be contracted to local vendors."

Best dRI detector of the world !
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Biotechnology, raw material characterization

"Coupled with a MALS and UV-visible detectors, the Optilab T-rEX push the limits of the biomolecules detection and quantification. Both ultrasensitive and ultra-broad dynamic range, no matter the sample concentration. There anyway a little flipside to that coin, to get a perfect baseline you need a perfect regulation of your LC pump, sometimes out of the range of the LC manufacturers AQ specs. But this is not a big deal, some optimizations of the LC system have just had to be done. "

"Brand new equipment in our lab (installed October 2015) in use with HPLC pump + Eclipse Dualtec and coupled with UV-visible and dRI (Optilab T-rEX) detectors, our Dawn Heleos 8+ MALS detector allow us to perform fine characterization of biomolecules we never could study before and allows us to support the development of our new immunoassay reagents that make us to head increasingly to particles and polysaccharides as antigens. Its use is very simple thanks to fast start-up of the instrument and the perfect Astra software integration. The built-in Comet ultrasound sonicator enable a perfect cleaning of the cell. Everything is perfectly well designed and focused to make life easier for the user. I would also mention the rapid and efficient support from the application specialists team. Very great instrument!! A very good instrument - I wish they would support it longer than 8 years.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Analyze proteins, protein complexes and Protein DNA complexes

"We get very good results and very reproducible results with our instrument. It is easy to use in principle. But in a multi user environment it is hard to keep the MALS detector scrupulously clean which is a prerequisite for good data. That has absolutely nothing to do with Wyatt or the quality of the instrument but is a fact of life for Light Scattering experiments. So it is not an instrument that everybody can be easily trained on just because the measure on carful sample and solvent preparation and on carful treatment of the SEC system connected to the MALS this is hard to drum into people. Consequently, because we have multiple users we have quite often issues with cleaning detectors but the customer service from Wyatt is incredible and has so far been amazing helping me to sort the stupid things out that happen with multiple users. Especially if used exclusively by a well-trained, meticulous person I don't think the Wyatt MALS systems can be beaten. And The LS University goes a long way to insure training and understanding of instrument, method and limitations. I only wish the support would be longer than 8 years. In an academic setting it is really next to impossible to raise money to update instruments with this frequency! That is my only negative comment for support. "

Solid results, great support.
Rating: 4.7

  • Application Area:Protein characterization, vaccines

"This instrument and technology has been critical in helping characterize materials used in our vaccine program. SEC-MALS has provided some novel insight into the composition/nature of one of our products which would not have been accessible with alternative techniques (and definitely not with SEC alone). We are in the process of relocating and expanding our operations; this instrument is at the top of the list to duplicate so we can continue to achieve our goal of robust characterization of molecules in our pipeline."

The results are robust and reproducible.
Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:molecular size of proteins, protein/DNA complexes, protein/carbohydrate conjugates

"SEC-MALS is the technique of choice in our lab to characterize our proteins and complexes in terms of their molar mass. We use either the Opti-rEX and UV or both detectors as a source for the concentration depending on our applications. The instrument is easy to use and taking the precaution of preparing fresh solutions and filtering running buffers and samples, the instrument runs smoothly most of the time. "

Rating: 5.0

  • Application Area:Analyze antibody-drug conjugates and other bio-conjugates for MW and polydispersity.

"The DAWN HELEOS II MALS detector is one of the best instruments I have ever used in my many years in analytical chemistry labs. A very easy to use instrument that gives reliable results. I can depend on this instrument day in and day out. Not only is the instrument outstanding, but the customer service is bar none the best I have ever come across. No matter what question or issue I have, Wyatt's customer service has an answer that works. I will be using this instrument and working with Wyatt for the rest of my career. All other companies have a lot to improve on to get even remotely close to the level Wyatt is at. Thanks for your amazing products and your even better customer service."
