Assessing drug release from microparticles
Transwell plates offer a fantastic means of assessing drug release from the drug delivery microparticles we synthesize in our lab, without worrying about direct interaction with cells. I like that you can choose various mesh sizes depending on you application and or cell type. I find the inserts somewhat hard to remove sometimes but they work well nonetheless. My only complaint is pricing, which seems a bit excessive considering they are merely 24 well plates with plastic inserts, but there is nothing comparable available that works as well.

Corning® Osteo Assay Surface 24 Well Plates with Transwell® Permeable Supports – A Useful Tool for Co-Culture Studies
In an effort to develop tools designed to enable scientific investigation of bone cell physiology, this study was performed to evaluate functional osteoclast activity in vitro using a synthetic inorganic bone surface. The consistency and superior visualization properties of the Corning Osteo Assay Surface were demonstrated. Studies demonstrating cell-cell communication in an in vitro co-culture environment were also performed using this surface in conjunction with the Transwell permeable support insert.
