Trace element analysis (trace metals [copper, zinc & selenium], Cobalt & chromium, Sweats & Urine)

Very user-friendly system that requires little intervention in terms of maintenance, analysis time per sample helps to increase throughput and turnaround time. From a user that has used the AA Spectra previously, this simplifies the whole process, semi-automated system, less intrusive, and very robust instrument. Ability to reproduce results with low RSD%, good accuracy, and precision. Feedback from Biomedical scientists that I have trained on the instrument, generally they felt like the instrument looks complicated from afar but following training, they feel it is very easy to use and the software is easy to use. In addition, the video tutorials for maintenance are very helpful and useful. Overall it is a very reliable instrument suitable for a fast working environment with zero unplanned instrument downtime. Great instrument! I have recommended this instrument to other labs.

Free your ICP-MS analysis from common time traps with the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS. It’s the smart way to reduce wasted time so busy staff can focus on tasks that deliver value. The 7850 ICP-MS instrument can handle samples with up to 25% solids, reducing the dilution time trap. The instrument features a helium mode collision cell and half mass correction that remove both polyatomic and doubly charged ion interferences, making method development simpler and addressing a common cause of time-wasting sample remeasurement.

Check out how the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS instrument boosts lab efficiency and helps reclaim wasted time throughout your ICP-MS analysis.

Features:

  • Standard operating procedures and fully developed methods for regulated and routine methods save you weeks of method development and documentation time.
  • Ultra High Matrix Introduction (UHMI) reduces sample preparation time by allowing you to directly analyze samples containing up to 25% total dissolved solids without dilution.
  • Helium collision cell and half-mass correction remove troublesome polyatomic and doubly-charged interferences that can reduce data quality and increase the need for costly sample remeasurements.
  • Measure high matrix samples without having to matrix-match calibration standards. Hydrochloric acid can also be added to stabilize important elements including Hg, Ag, Mo without introducing new interferences.
  • Identify unusual sample matrices using IntelliQuant and get a complete elemental profile of each sample. A range of displays, including Periodic table heat map allow you to easily identify abnormal levels of major or unexpected elements.
  • Outlier Conditional Formatting (OCF) reduces data review times for busy or inexperienced ICP-MS operators by highlighting results that are outside a nominated range or have failed a test requirement. Alerts can be configured for different requirements.
  • Early Maintenance Feedback (EMF) uses sensors and counters to determine when maintenance is needed. Traffic light, color-coded alerts means maintenance tasks are never missed but are also not performed more frequently than necessary.
  • ICP Go is an optional, browser-based user-interface for mobile devices offering simplified set up and control of routine sample batches and is great for ICP-MS operators on the move.
  • Method-specific Analyzer packages containing ICP-MS hardware, software, consumables, professional services and documentation ensure you’ll be running samples in weeks, instead of the months it can take to develop, optimize, verify and document a regulated method.

Determination of heavy metals and trace elements in alternative meats per EAM 4.7 Method for ICP-MS

The food industry is aware of the rise in popularity of meat-free foods and is actively investigating processes and products that can help meet the demand. The trend for meat-free foods can be seen by the ever-increasing selection of alternative protein products on supermarket shelves, and on the menus of fast-food outlets and restaurants. Some food companies are already selling products that are produced by cultivating meat-tissue from animal-origin cells, grown in a bioreactor.

To ensure that non-meat based protein or cultured protein products are safe for human consumption and to understand their macro and micronutrient content, elemental analysis is necessary. Elemental analysis can determine the concentration of heavy metals as well as nutrient elements such as potassium and calcium in these products.

This study describes the use of the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS and Agilent SPS 4 autosampler for the analysis of 30 elements in different plant-based alternative meat samples and 29 elements in cell-culture solutions. The study includes measurement equipment and parameters and provides typical results, making it useful for analysts developing methods for non-meat based protein products.

Monitoring compliance with heavy metals limits in baby food

An investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives issued a report in February 2021 showing that many baby foods sold in US supermarkets contained unacceptably high concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg. These findings led to the development of the Baby Food Safety Act 2021. The Act sets out maximum levels of inorganic As (the most toxic form of As), Pb, Cd, and Hg permitted in baby foods sold in the US (Table 1). Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published action level guidance for industry for inorganic arsenic (iAs) in rice cereals for infants, which is the same level as in the European Union (EU). In response to the Act, the FDA has also outlined the Closer to Zero action plan for baby foods.
