An Invaluable Piece of Laboratory Equipment! A Must Have For Everyone!

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Ultrapure Water for UHV Component Cleaning

This high quality piece of equipment produces ultra pure water at the touch of a button. With several modes of operation of varying levels of purity at multiple speeds this is a flexible and adaptable bit of kit that will fit into water niche your lab requires. I find the purity perfect for the final stages of sonication cleaning for ultra high vacuum components. We also use this for biological sample cleaning and preparation. I have used this for serial dilutions of our stock solutions without issue or problem. The customer service at Merck is impeccable and I cannot fault it. Whilst this piece of equipment is on the pricier end of the scale, you definitely get what you pay for. It is incredibly easy to install, although setup and yearly filter pack changing can feel like a chore. It is quite a time intensive process, although simple, and I tend to set aside a day for the full change. Even though it is expensive, I think it is tremendous value for money and the best option out there on the market. If you can get your finance team to spring for it, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it!

Obtaining ultrapure water for sensitive PFAS analysis by LC-MS

Discover how the Milli-Q® water purification system is suitable for the most sensitive PFAS analyses by LC-MS/MS. Ultrapure water produced by a Milli-Q IQ 7000 system fitted with a LC-Pak® polisher at the point-of-dispense was tested for 40 PFAS compounds according to the draft EPA 1633 method. None of the 40 compounds tested were detected in the water.

Four ways to better water quality in LC-MS

High purity water is key to the success of analyses performed using (ultra) High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, (U)HPLC-MS — or as it is more commonly known, LC-MS. Even so, chromatographers may consciously select top-quality salts and organic solvents for mobile phase preparation, but not apply the same level of care when choosing their source of high purity water. Here, Merck discusses several aspects of working with high purity water in LC-MS analyses including quality and handling.

Application NoteSeparations

Drinking water testing by ion chromatography

The quality of drinking water is strictly regulated. Merck evaluates the suitability of ultrapure water produced by a Milli-Q® IQ 7000 water purification system for ion chromatography (IC) analysis of inorganic ions and disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. Explore a study which demonstrates that freshly delivered ultrapure water from the system meets the stringent purity requirements for IC analysis, with inorganic ion concentrations significantly below regulatory limits. Additionally, DBPs were not detected in the ultrapure water, indicating the effectiveness of the purification system in removing contaminants.

Ultrapure water for BPA-free culture media in embryology research

In this application note, Merck presents a study to establish a technique to detect low levels of endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) in water and to document how a Milli-Q® IQ 7000 water purification system equipped with a Biopak® ultrafilter (configuration recommended for molecular biology applications) produces reference ultrapure water that is suitable for BPA-sensitive embryology research.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system of humans and animals. They affect growth as well as reproduction, immune, and nervous systems, causing adverse health consequences. Found in plastics (including laboratory consumables and equipment), lacquers, resins, and surfactants, endocrine disruptors are regarded as omnipresent.

Among the various industrially produced endocrine disruptors, BPA is one of the most widespread. BPA is known as a ‘xenoestrogen’ as it mimics the estrogen hormone, and therefore raises major health concerns. Several studies have confirmed that BPA interferes with the production of hormones and the expression of their genes.

Ultrapure Water for Determination of Toxic Elements in Environmental Analyses

Dramatic improvement in the sensitivity of analytical instruments over the last decades has changed our understanding of environmental contamination and hazardous effects of metals such as Be, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Ba, Hg, Tl, and Pb. This has resulted in a number of regulations and guidelines that establish the maximum acceptable or recommendable concentrations of toxic metals in drinking water, marine water, and wastewater. The requirements instituted by authorities consequently have resulted in a growing need for toxic metal monitoring in environmental laboratories where spectrometry techniques are standard instrumentation recommended for the determination of trace elements.

Application NoteEnvironmental

Trace LC-MS/MS Analysis of Hormones in Tap Water and After Purification to Laboratory Grade

Hormones are examples of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) that have been detected in environmental and drinking waters around the world in trace amounts. Even at very low concentrations, CECs could potentially exert ecotoxicological effects. In this application note, three hormones were detected by LC-MS/MS in the tap water of different laboratories. After purification by Milli-Q® water purification systems, the hormones were no longer detected in the product ultrapure water.

Handling High Purity Water in the LC-MS Laboratory

Ultrapure water is highly prone to contamination, as it can easily leach contaminants out of container surfaces and absorb contamination from the laboratory environment. As ultrapure water is the most frequently used solvent in any LC-MS laboratory, its purity plays a critical role in analyses. The following poster discusses a number of methods to avoid the contamination of ultrapure water.

Webinar

Is your lab water pure enough for sensitive PFAS analyses?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also referred to as ‘forever chemicals’, are an increasing concern since they accumulate in the environment and may have some deleterious effects on human health.
