Great value for money ICP-MS instrument
trace metal analysis
NexION 350X is a very robust ICP-MS instrument which can be used for routine trace metal analysis of samples of environmental and biological interest. It can also be employed for research needs, including the analysis of single particles and single cells. All the above applications can be performed using NexION in its standard mode of operation, as well as in Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED) or Dynamic Reaction Mode (DRC), i.e., modes allowing for the suppression of spectral interferences so that lower instrumental limits of detection can be achieved. NexION provides additional flexibility in its use of a supplementary flow of oxygen gas by means of all matrix solution (AMS) operation mode, rendering elemental isotope detection possible within high matrix loads. Instrument cleaning and maintenance is fairly easy to carry out, while the Syngistix software that controls NexION’s operation is user-friendly and very simple to learn. Instrument support provided by Perkin Elmer is also very efficient, as frequently problems can be resolved through TeamViewer sessions.

Great results but has to be improved
Pharmaceuticals
Instrument is easy to use but the software has to be improved (all the calculations have to be done in excel). Also, spare parts are expensive. Support is okay but not top.

Excellent results for the environment samples the laboratory received.
Water samples
My take on it is that the PerkinElmer instruments are well tested and very reliable. The brand PerkinElmer has a good reputation and the highest market share. If you need to analyze elements at the ppt level and the samples in large amounts, perhaps you have to use ICP-MS.

Analyze water samples
High-performance multi-element analysis instrument for the inorganic laboratory. Excellent value for the money, saving the laboratory on running costs.
Review Date: 9 Jul 2020 | PerkinElmer
This is a great instrument that has added a key value to our lab needs and research.
Analysis of trace metals in water and biological fluids
With NexION 350 ICPMS we were able to achieve reproducible data, even from challenging matrices including soils, water and blood. The instrument is easy to use, thanks to the excellent software interface. I do not think we could do as good without the amazing technical support we receive from PerkinElmer. We are able to analyze any element and more than 40 elements from one sample. More importantly, this is a machine that you can set up a couple of hundred samples on and leave to run to completion overnight without a single issue.

When your instrument is more efficient and productive, so too are your scientists and your lab. And nothing puts the flow in your workflow better than the NexION® 350 ICP-MS.
With a data acquisition speed 10 times faster than any other ICP-MS on the market, the new NexION 350 ICP-MS opens up a whole new world of efficiency and opportunity, allowing you to measure more in less time, and accurately characterize nanoparticles.
In addition to the exceptional application flexibility afforded by its speed, the instrument also delivers superior uptime and productivity through a variety of unique features engineered to enhance signal stability:
- Triple Cone Interface produces the industry’s most tightly focused ion beam and prevents sample deposition on internal components.
- Quadrupole Ion Deflector turns positively charged ions 90° into the Universal Cell and filters off neutrals.
- Analyzing Quadrupole made of a unique steel alloy for negligible thermal expansion for unparalleled stability.
- No extraction lenses to clean for minimized maintenance.
New Research Evaluating Cisplatin Uptake in Ovarian Cancer Cells by Single Cell ICP-MS
Cisplatin is one of the most widely used platinum-based cancer chemotherapy drugs. Its effectiveness is due to its ability to bind to the cancers DNA, resulting in DNA-platinum adducts, which bends the DNA, resulting in a lack of DNA replication. Despite initial success, cisplatin drug resistance is common in relapse. This application note describes how SC-ICP-MS can be used to explore cellular uptake of cisplatin at the single cell level.
An Introduction to Single Cell ICP-MS Analysis
The introduction and development of Single Particle ICP-MS (SP-ICP-MS) has opened a new area of research which allows the rapid detection and analysis of metal-based particles in a variety of matrices and applications.1-6 The key feature of SP-ICP-MS is that it allows discrete pulses of positively charged ions to be detected and measured in a time-resolved manner using microsecond (µs) data acquisition rates. This advance in data acquisition capabilities is opening up a number of new application areas. In this white paper, Perkin Elmer introduces the concept of Single Cell ICP-MS (SC-ICP-MS), where individual cells are rapidly analyzed for metal content.

Gold Nanoparticle Uptake by Tomato Plants Characterized by Single Particle ICP-MS
With the increasing use of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in a variety of products and processes, there is concern about the release of ENPs into and impact on the environment. One aspect of the environmental impact of ENPs that must be explored is their uptake by plants, as ENPs can make their way to plants via migration through water and/or soil. Research limitations can be avoided by careful choice of the ENP extraction procedure and performing the analysis with single particle ICP-MS (SP-ICP-MS), the combination of which will preserve the particle size information, allow for rapid analysis of a large number of samples, and yield results on the particle size, concentration, and size distribution. This application note explores such a technique for analysis of gold nanoparticle uptake in tomato plants.

Implementation of USP New Chapters <232> and <233> on Elemental Impurities in Pharmaceutical Products
This whitepaper is intended to keep the pharmaceutical community abreast of the latest developments with regard to the new chapters on elemental impurities in pharmaceutical products in the United States Pharmacopeia’s (USP) National Formulary (NF). It provides an overview of the salient points described in Chapter <232> on Elemental Limits and Chapter <233> on Analytical Procedures and offered suggestions as how best to approach the determination of elemental impurities in pharmaceutical products using PerkinElmer ICPAES/ OES and ICP-MS instrumentation. It is meant to be the first step in educating pharmaceutical laboratories and explaining why the old “Heavy Metals Test”, described in Chapter <231> is being replaced with these two brand new chapters. The approval of Chapter <2232> –“Elemental Contamination of Dietary Supplements” – is still going through the USP review and comments process.
Analysis of NIST® Gold Nanoparticles Reference Materials Using the NexION 300 ICP-MS in Single Particle Mode
This application note explores the capability of modern ICP-MS to measure the key characteristics of metal manufactured nanoparticles. ICP-MS is rapidly becoming the elemental measurement technique of choice for assessing the manufacturing and environmental life cycle of engineered nanoparticles. In Standard mode, an ICP-MS provides accurate composition and concentration measurements. In Single Particle mode (SP-ICP-MS), it allows the differentiation between ionic and particulate signals, measures particle sizes (if shape is known), and explores agglomeration and size distribution.
Colorado School of Mines Uses a NexION 300Q ICP-MS to Obtain a Better Understanding of the Environmental Impact of Engineered Nanomaterials
This case study presents Dr. Ranville of the Colorado School of Mines research in the area of nanoparticle sensitivity and specificity involving the use of ICP mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Because of its trace element capability, and extremely low detection limits, the technique is ideally suited to the characterization of ENPs, containing elements such as Ag, Au, Ti and Fe, which have been integrated into larger products such as consumer goods, foods, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. The ubiquitous use of goods containing these nanomaterials will inevitably lead to environmental releases, which may be studied and quantified using state-of-the-art ICP-MS technology, such as PerkinElmer’s NexION® 300Q system, which was acquired recently.
