Would be dificult to perform GC/MS and GC/IRMS without this, especially as I have 2 GC-MS where I need to change columns and/or injection port parts frequently. I did live without one, but can't imagine going back to that situation again now.

Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting
Although slightly unifunctional it has a very attractive footprint and a great hand feel. It is truly (lab coat) pocket sized, super agile and sharp. Don’t be intimidated by its low tech features, sure enough, it tends to take a while for it to calibrate and stabilize but with the first sniff of the slightest of helium or hydrogen, the high-pitched alarm chimes like a symphony and the bar of red LEDs fire up like Christmas lights. Enjoyable to work with and just the right amount of retro feel to hit the spot. It’s ideal for testing all imaginable gas connections. The tube and probe have been perfectly engineered and admirably well-adjusted for length and stiffness to a Zen-like balance. There’s a small hole for convenient storing of the probe, neatly done. The battery is well hidden, recharging is a bliss though rarely needed. Apart from the exquisitely soft, though slightly under-sized power button, there’s an equally pleasant push button that makes resetting the device as simple as… pushing a button. Leak proofing your fittings will probably not save lives or cure cancer but it will almost certainly save money and time.

This device saves time for finding leak in GC plumbing. We used to use liquid leak detection solution but it is hard to find small leaks and made a mess after finding leaks in GC. Make sure to read instructions before.

So simple anyone can use it. It's a must have for finding leaks on fittings, GCs, GC/MSD and any other application where He, H2, N2, Argon, O2 leaks are critical. Also recommend purchasing the small probe adaptor, restek pn22658.

For years I managed without one of these using soap solution or one of the aerosol products to check for leaks, but once you have used a Restek leak detector there is no going back. Its just so much more convenient, sensitive and doesnt leave deposits on the pipes. I bought mine on sale and whilst i dont use it that often, its an absolutely essential piece of kit I would not be without. It will detect leaks with He, H2, N2, Ar and CO2.
