Product News: New Seahorse XFp Analyzer Makes Measuring Metabolism Affordable for Every Lab

16 Jun 2014

Seahorse Bioscience, the world leader in metabolic analyzers and XF stress test kits for measuring cell metabolism, introduces the XFp Extracellular Flux Analyzer, an affordable extension to the XF product platform. This new, lower cost instrument will enable many more labs access to Seahorse’s unique technology.

Seahorse Extracellular Flux (XF) Analyzers perform real time ‘stress tests’ of the two major energy-producing pathways of the cell mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis detecting important changes in metabolism as reported in over 1,000 peer reviewed publications. The XFp Analyzer quickly and easily delivers these same standard metabolic assays the XF Cell Mito Stress Test, the XF Glycolysis Stress Test, and the XF Metabolic Switch Test.

“The rapid adoption of XF technology has coincided with an explosion of new discoveries relating cell metabolism to disease and therapies in research areas such as cancer, immunology, obesity and diabetes, and neurodegeneration,” stated Jay Teich, Seahorse Bioscience CEO. “We’re finding many scientists want access to our technology, but are unable to request a Seahorse on an individual grant. The affordable XFp Analyzer changes this. Researchers and clinicians can now have their own Seahorse, and join in building the body of knowledge describing the most basic function within a cell - the ability to generate energy to sustain life.”

“Seahorse XF technology has now made the mysteries of metabolism much more accessible to the mainstream scientist,” stated Victor Darley-Usmar, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology, Director of the Mitochondrial Medicine Laboratory at the University of Alabama Birmingham. “The XFp platform is tailor-made for that incisive experiment requiring only a small amount of sample – experiments that can open the door to a lifetime fascination in cell metabolism research.”

Incorporating a patent pending miniplate, the XFp is ideal for use in pairwise comparisons of patient-derived samples, or other precious samples from animal models. The compact, easy-to-use XFp Analyzer has intuitive touch screen-based software, and streamlined workflow that makes designing and running XF assays simple and straightforward. XF analyzers and stress test kits have set the standard for the measurement of cell metabolism, enabling scientists to connect genomic and proteomic data to cellular function. With this knowledge, scientists are generating new insights into metabolic function, leading to a greater understanding and new treatments of disease. The XFp Analyzer will begin shipping in Q4 2014.
