Meet FACSCOPE Evo, a compact automatic cell counter with AI-assisted viability analysis

Compact new system combines AI-assisted image segmentation, enhanced cell detection and streamlined workflows for reliable cell counting and viability analysis

19 Oct 2026

Curiosis has launched FACSCOPE® Evo, a new compact automatic cell counter designed to streamline routine cell counting and viability analysis. Image-based autofocus helps capture clear and consistent images, while an improved cell detection algorithm identifies cells with irregular morphologies and distinguishes individual cells within aggregates.

Newly introduced AI-assisted image segmentation further improves the differentiation between viable and non-viable cells, supporting more reliable viability measurements. A four-channel disposable slide reduces repetitive sample handling, while customizable presets and an integrated touchscreen simplify everyday cell-counting workflows.

How FACSCOPE® Evo improves routine cell counting

Clear imaging for more reliable cell detection

FACSCOPE® Evo uses image-based autofocus to identify the optimal focal plane and capture clear, consistent cell images. Based on these images, its improved detection algorithm identifies individual cells and defines their boundaries, including cells with irregular morphologies or within aggregates. This supports reliable counting in samples where individual cells may otherwise be difficult to distinguish.

Pixel-level analysis for clearer live/dead classification

AI-assisted image segmentation analyzes cells at the pixel level, enabling clearer differentiation between viable cells and non-viable cells. The algorithm extracts relevant visual information from the image and uses it to create a detailed map showing which pixels belong to each cell. This enables the system to evaluate differences in staining more precisely and clearly distinguish unstained viable cells from dye-positive non-viable cells.

Process multiple samples with less handling

The four-channel disposable counting slide allows multiple samples to be loaded on a single slide, with each channel analyzed in approximately 15 seconds. This reduces repetitive sample handling and simplifies routine cell-counting workflows.

Compact and flexible for everyday use

With a compact footprint of 167 × 270 × 201 mm and a weight of 2.89 kg, FACSCOPE® Evo fits easily into limited bench space. The entire counting workflow can be managed through the integrated 8-inch touchscreen, without the need for an external computer.

Customizable presets allow counting parameters to be saved for specific cell types or experimental conditions, supporting consistent analysis across repeated measurements and users. Counting results, viability data and cell images can be reviewed directly on the instrument and exported in PDF, CSV or JPG formats. Optional Wi-Fi connectivity and peripheral support provide added flexibility for data management.

FACSCOPE® Evo brings greater consistency and efficiency to routine cell counting by combining improved cell detection and AI-assisted viability analysis with a simplified workflow. Its compact, integrated design makes reliable automated cell counting easy to incorporate into everyday laboratory workflows.

Flow Cytometry / Cell CountingFlow cytometers are used to count, sort and examine multiple characteristics of cells. Other cell analysis equipment includes image cytometers, cell counters, fluorescence-activated cell sorters (FACS), magnetic-activated cell sorters (MACS), and a range of flow cytometry assay kits. Flow cytometers can reveal information on cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle progression, as well as identify cell populations and intracellular or cell-surface molecules. Additionally, some flow cytometers, known as FACS, have an additional sorting function after analysis. Cell counters and image cytometers count live and dead cell populations and can also conduct cell proliferation assays.
