Sample homogenization for DNA extraction
We implemented the Precellys Evolution Tissue Homogenizer two years ago in our lab. I am extracting fungal DNA out of plant tissue (wood and leaves). Before we used an old bead mill and we were not satisfied as the samples required long, heavy beating to get properly homogenized, which was disadvanteagous as they heated up to much and therefore needed cooling breaks in between. Additionally, we could only prepare 8 samples at a time. In total, the procedure of homogenization was not working properly. With the precellys evolution homogenization only needs about 2 minutes for 24 samples with satisfying results regarding mechanical disruption of the samples. The results we achieve subsequently are very good. We established several protocols that work very well, although our samples usually contain only very small amounts of the target DNA.

Robust instrument.
Metabolites analysis using human gut tissues
I have used another homogenizer before and comparing with Precellys, the latter is easier to use and without the need to balance the tubes. With cryolysis function, the tubes are kept at constant cold temp. The instrument has some safety feature that will detect if the tubes are lock in place before homogenisation starts. I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a good homogenizer that comes with multi function.

Eliminate long tedious steps, process several samples at once, rapid results LOVE IT!
Analyze protein, cytokines and other metabolites in various tissue samples
The Precellys homogenizer, also known as 'R2D2' in our lab, is a workhorse. We regularly use it to homogenize different tissue samples - mouse brain regions, liver, heart, etc. Breaking down the whole tissue is always laborious and is a critical step in the analysis. We have moved away from homogenizing 1 sample at a time with a handheld homogenizer to about 30 samples with ease and all it takes is 10 seconds! We end up saving a lot of time and resources with high-quality reproducible results. We use the homogenizer to extract protein, DNA and RNA from tissue for western blot, ELISA, or qPCR analyses. The homogenizer is very user friendly and lets you set up personalized protocols. Customer service is impeccable and fast- they will get you what you need. This is by far my favorite equipment in the lab!

Great. Very easy to use, very practical, love it. The kit is quite expensive though.
Homogenization of small tissues for RNA and protein extraction.
We are currently using the Homogenizer for small tissue homogenization. We use mice arteries (2-5 mg of tissue) and we were having a lot of troubles with the process, considering the size of the sample and the fact that the elastic layer of the artery wall makes the homogenization very difficult to achieve, and with poor reproducibility. We acquired the homogenizer only a few days ago, and I have to admit that I’m in love with it. Using RIPA of Trizol reagent, we can easily and with a very good reproducibility obtain proteins and RNA from mice artery and heart, in just a few seconds. We will soon try other mice tissues. One very practical advantage is the fact that we can use the Trizol reagent directly with the sample in the homogenizer. One disadvantage is that the kit (the tubes with the beads) are quite expensive for our standards, so we can’t use it as much as we would like to. Overall, very very good. It literally solved a problem we have been struggling with for more than a year.

Great product, highly recommended.
Homogenize small to large volumes of ocular tissue from various species for Pharmacokinetic studies
I have found this product to be extremely effective in generating high quality lysates from a variety of tissue sources and volumes. It is fast, durable, and holds temperature well, all of which are critical for our procedures. I have had one malfunction in the display, which in collaboration with customer service was quite easy to fix by opening the housing and tightening a connection. I would recommend this product.

Determination of Nutrient Hot Spots on Coral Reefs Using a Common Macroalgae
Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. Coral reefs are built by colonies of tiny animals found in marine water that contain few nutrients. This research focuses on nutrient dynamics on coral reefs. The Burkepile lab in collaboration with the Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research Lab collected a common macroalgae, Turbinaria ornata, at 190 points around the island of Moorea, French Polynesia. Nutrient hot spots were evaluated by analyzing the tissue content of dried Turbinaria for carbon and nitrogen as well as stable isotopes.
Best Practices for Tough Sample Grinding in Molecular Biology Using Precellys
The biggest challenge when working with fibrous, elastic and tough samples is efficient sample processing. Furthermore, generation of heat causes degradation and denaturation. Here, Bertin Instruments describes the improvement of extraction yields of tough samples using the Precellys® evolution homogenizer, thanks to 3D-bead beating technology. When paired with the cryolys evolution cooling unit, this technology can also prevent degradation of heat-sensitive biological samples.
