Sample Cryopreservation
1.1mL tubes only actually hold ~900uL, and volume expansion during cryo means they actually hold even less. The tubes are also too long/too small diameter for a standard 1mL or 200uL pipette to to reach the bottom. Tube shape is still very nice though. Excellent dead volume. Barcoding and the multicolor caps are also extremely helpful.

Cryo storage of strains of yeast and bacteria
These tubes allow our lab to store more samples, in a scannable and organized fashion, in less space than the conventional 81-space or 100-space boxes. The 2D scannable barcode on the bottom ensures that even if hand-written labels or stick-on labels are lost the contents are known through our database. The racks ensure that each researcher's collection is stored uniformly with known 96-well plate identifiers (also barcoded.) This system is a must for large collections, but also completely practical for small labs that need to be mindful of the limited space in their freezer systems.
