Cross-species 3D liver models improve prediction of drug-induced liver injury

22 Jun 2026

This whitepaper explores the use of cross-species 3D liver microtissues to improve prediction of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) during preclinical development. Using a case study, the work demonstrates how advanced in vitro models can reveal species-specific mechanisms of toxicity that are not captured using traditional animal models or short-term cytotoxicity assays.

By combining long-term exposure studies with functional and transcriptomic analysis, the models enable identification of complex toxicity pathways and support more accurate human risk assessment. The findings highlight the value of integrating 3D in vitro liver systems early in drug discovery workflows to reduce late-stage attrition and improve translational outcomes.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. In vitro models are widely used in drug testing, cell biology, and disease research. Biomarkers can be used to diagnose presence of a disease and indicate disease severity. The discovery of new biomarkers is incredibly valuable in the field of diagnostics.
