A Rapid and Robust Sample Preparation Method for Quantitation of Nicotine from Oral Fluid

11 Sept 2017

Nicotine, its metabolite cotinine, and anabasine, a tobacco alkaloid, are often used to detect tobacco exposure. For tests like this, oral fluid collection has emerged as an alternative to other biological matrices. The additives and preservative buffer (critical for preservation of the chemical integrity of the oral fluid sample) present in the collection devices, must be removed for the proper upkeep of the mass spec detector. This technical note presents a solid phase extraction (SPE) method for simultaneous detection and quantitation of nicotine, cotinine, and anabasine from oral fluid.

SecurityGuard™ ULTRA Guard Cartridge System for UHPLC Columns

Phenomenex Inc

SecurityGuard ULTRA offers a convenient and economical way to extend core-shell, sub-2µm, and other UHPLC column lifetimes SecurityGuard™ ULTRA dramatically extends UHPLC column lifetime and is ideal for virtually any manufacturer's UHPLC, sub-2µm or core-shell columns. SecurityGuard ULTRA protects against the damaging effects of chemical contaminants and microparticulates introduced by the sample, mobile phase or system, which can negatively impact column lifetime, method sensitivity, quantitation and peak identification. By reducing the frequency of column replacements, as well as the need for troubleshooting and system down time, SecurityGuard ULTRA saves chromatographers time and money. Pressure-rated up to 20,000 psi (1,378 bar), these guard cartridges have no significant impact on chromatography, backpressure or dead volume. To watch how easy it is to install SecurityGuard ULTRA visit the product webpage. SecurityGuard ULTRA provides the following advantages: Virtually no change in chromatography Easy cartridge replacement Universal fit compatible with majority of UHPLC column endfittings Pressure rated up to 20,000 psi. Phenomenex also offers an interactive web application where users can enter their UHPLC, sub-2µm or core-shell column information to find the most appropriate column protection system. LC-MSLC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) systems and equipment are used for separation and quantitative analysis of complex mixtures, combining liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Quantify proteins, contaminants, pesticides or screen for drug metabolites with a high level of sensitivity. LC-MS systems and equipment include reverse phase, normal phase and specialized columns integrated with various MS detectors such as time-of-flight (TOF), quadrupole, orbitrap or ion trap mass analyzers. LC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzer give greater sensitivity and resolving power to your analysis. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. Forensic genetic instruments, kits and reagents enable the analysis of evidence collected  at the crime scene. Reagents and kits for presumptive analysis for body fluids such as blood, saliva and semen in addition to drugs and narcotics test kits are used for CSI. Fingerprinting equipment, forensic light sources, casting kits and equipment for collecting recoverable materials can be found in the directory.Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Drug TestingIt is essential to test the efficacy and toxicity of drugs at every stage of their development to ensure that a pharmaceutical product is fit for purpose and safe for use before reaching the stage of mass production and distribution.Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a sample preparation technique used to separate and concentrate analytes from complex mixtures. It is widely used in environmental, pharmaceutical, and clinical analysis. SPE provides higher sensitivity and selectivity compared to traditional liquid-liquid extraction methods, making it essential for accurate and reproducible results.
