Application Area:

Drug delivery and biotracking

The instrument is ultimate!!! I have used it several times for particle size and zeta potential studies and found that it is scientists friendly and gives results in no time. Therefore, I prefer Malvern Zetasizer Ultra for my drug delivery studies and I have published a good impact journal recently in Q1 journal that is Carbohydrate polymers (IF: 10.7)(https://doi.org/10.1016/j.carbpol.2022.119426). Thanks to Malvern Panalytical

Analysis of Pharmaceutical Samples

We used this equipment to analyze our formulation in Nano scale which we developed for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Because of the easy layout and working of this instrument, it makes the work done faster. Also, the results are extremely consistent and reproducible. Such characteristics are very important to our pharma industry as it will directly affect the health of the patient consuming the product.

Application Area:

Analyzing macromolecular and nanoparticle sizes and zeta potential

The Zetasizer Ultra is a very useful instrument for our R&D activities as we can measure sizes of antibodies and other proteins, assess their aggregation status, and determine also approximate concentrations using the 3 angle measurement capabilities. We are also using the Zeta Potential technique to measure surface charges, mainly for nanoparticles and surface-modified nanoparticles. The system is robust and little instructions are needed for newcomers to DLS/ZP. The "Measure" menu is easy to use, but the data analysis is not well outlined. For example, one can only save ONE custom configuration of data displays, but each user has its own preferences and needs. The selection of the data display parameters and measurement conditions are not well accessible/presentable. Maybe it would be an advantage to be able to split graphs and tables into two different monitors for a better overview and quicker data analysis. Data transfer to a server or between two PCs is not user-friendly at all. Way too many steps, Malvern should find a better solution. The newest software version (V2.0+) does not run on our lap PC and so far nobody could resolve it. The Tech Support from Ulf Nobbmann is excellent, mostly available and feedback is always on the point. Malvern may consider offering the ZS Ultra with two laser wavelengths in the same instrument! We have troubles sometimes with fluorescently labeled species and strong fluorescence reaching the detectors - the filter in front of the BS detector is not sufficient to eliminate all fluorescence if strong emitters are investigated. Would be great to simply switch to laser wavelengths which is not exciting fluorophores. Although DLS/ZP measurements are very straightforward to do on the ZS Ultra, continuous education is needed to become proficient. The Malvern Materials Talks are of substantial help, similar webinars.

Sizing and zeta potential measurement

The Zetasizer was a great addition to the analytical instrument available in our lab for sizing and zeta potential experiment. The software is self-intuitive and easy to operate. The customer service is top-notched and the care team will regularly check in on the status or any troubleshooting issues which we might have. Overall, it's a useful instrument to help us generate quick data (in several mins).

Manufacturer's Response

Thanks for the review and glad to hear you are finding the system intuitive to use and our local distributors are supporting our customers well.

The Zetasizer Ultra is the world’s most capable combined DLS and ELS system, incorporating Non-Invasive Back Scatter (NIBS®) and, uniquely, Multi-Angle Dynamic Light Scattering (MADLS) technology for the measurement of particle and molecular size. NIBS provides the versatility and sensitivity to measure over a wide concentration range, while MADLS permits a higher resolution view into your sample’s size distribution for those critical measurements.

An extension to MADLS affords the ability to directly analyze particle concentration. The measurement of particle concentration is calibration-free, suitable for a wide range of materials, requires no or little dilution, and is quick to use – all of which make it ideal as a screening technique. This is a unique capability of the Zetasizer Ultra which can even be applied to samples such as viruses and VLPs, which were previously very challenging to measure.

The Zetasizer Ultra also provides the highest sensitivity zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility measurements using M3-PALS technology. Our affordable disposable folded capillary cells enable measurements in extremely low volumes, without direct sample-electrode contact, using our patented diffusion barrier method. The information provided by these measurements is an excellent indicator of sample stability and/or propensity to aggregate.

The addition of Constant Current Mode for measuring electrophoretic mobility and zeta potential in high conductivity media reduces errors that can be associated with electrode polarization at higher ion concentrations.
