Quantifying DNA and RNA concentrations
The one standout feature of NanoDrop knows is that you only need a very small volume of sample to measure the DNA, around one microliter, and within as little as one minute, you can measure several samples in one go – which is commendable. Also, it gives you absorbance ratio values at different wavelengths, which help us to know the purity of the sample.

Acclaro Contaminant Identification ensures samples are high quality
Know the true concentration of your nucleic acid or protein without the interfering effects of sample contaminants. Understanding your sample composition helps downstream experiments go right the first time.
- Contaminant identification – recognizes common contaminants in nucleic acid and protein samples that could inhibit downstream reactions or falsely elevate calculated concentrations
- Corrected calculations – applies chemometric algorithms to determine the true concentration of your analyte without the contaminant
- Differentiate DNA from RNA – algorithms can identify mammalian RNA contaminating a dsDNA sample or mammalian dsDNA contaminating an RNA sample
NanoDrop Eight spectrophotometer enhancements
- Wider dynamic range – measure higher concentration samples without dilution – up to 10,000 ng/µL dsDNA or 145 mg/mL IgG
- Auto-Measure and Auto-Blank functions – multi-sample processing can be streamlined with instant measurements that occur when the pedestal arm is down. These functions can be turned ON or OFF
- Ergonomic ambidextrous pipetting – Pedestal array is aligned perpendicular to the front of the instrument creating a natural pipetting motion for users; the pipette guide is magnetic and movable from side-to-side allowing left- and righthanded users to quickly and comfortably dispense samples
- Automated exports for LIMS – set a directory for data to be automatically exported; have your LIMS software sweep the folder to pull in NanoDrop Eight instrument data for archiving
The best tools for DNA and RNA quantification
Nucleic acid quantification (NAQ) determines the concentration of DNA or RNA in a sample, enabling the calculation of the correct amount of nucleic acid required for downstream applications. Using the correct amount of nucleic acid saves time and money, preventing downstream experimental failures, and ensures data quality. Discover how to select the most suitable technology for optimal nucleic acid input, and explore how solutions from Thermo Fisher Scientific offer reliable experimental outcomes, and can help to avoid issues like insufficient amplification or poor sequencing results.
Quantifying soy DNA extracts for downstream GMO detection
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific highlights that the controversy surrounding grocery products containing genetically modified organisms (GMO) has increased the demand for analytical testing in the food and beverage industry. GMOs, or transgenic crops, are altered through bioengineering to introduce desired traits not naturally occurring in the species. Ensuring data reliability in GMO detection is essential for compliance with government regulations. Preparing DNA for qPCR analysis requires high purity and known concentrations, which can be determined using the NanoDrop™ Eight spectrophotometer and Acclaro™ technology, ensuring successful GMO screening in food and beverage products.
