Isotope ratio analysis of sulfate using Orbitrap Exploris Isotope Solutions
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates how Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ Isotope Solutions allow for comprehensive isotope ratio analysis of sulfur and oxygen within intact molecular sulfate ions.
Uncover new dimensions of isotope ratio analysis with Thermo Scientific Orbitrap MS technology
Isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is a powerful tool for determining subtle isotopic variations within a sample and works by breaking down complex molecules in simple gases. This technique can provide unique insights however important intramolecular isotopic information is often lost.
Explore a new, comprehensive approach to IRMS using electrospray ionization (ESI). Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap™ MS technology gives access to a wide range of isotopic information from a variety of polar compounds in liquid samples. In contrast to classical IRMS methods, Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ Isotope Solutions enable the calculation of isotope ratios directly from the relative abundances of the compounds isotopologues, measured as intact molecular ions.
Comprehensive isotope ratio analysis of amino acids using Orbitrap Exploris Isotope Solutions
This technical note highlights the use of Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ Isotope Solutions for precise isotope ratio analysis of amino acids, focusing on glutamic acid as a model compound. Glutamate plays a key role in metabolism, neurotransmission, and nitrogen excretion. The advanced Orbitrap™ technology enables simultaneous carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen isotope ratio analysis from intact molecular ions by a single analysis, offering valuable insights into biochemical processes and metabolic pathways.
Isotope ratio analysis of nitrate using Orbitrap Exploris Isotope Solutions
Nitrate (NO3−) is a key component of the global cycling of nitrogen in natural and human-impacted environments. Analysis and interpretation of nitrate isotopes can reveal microbial pathways of nitrification and denitrification, as well as sources and fate of natural and anthropogenic nitrogen inputs to the environment. Isotope ratio analyses are investigating the relative abundances of the three heavier isotopes in nitrate (15N, 18O, and 17O) in comparison to the more abundant, lower mass isotopes (14N and 16O).
In this technical note, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates how Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ Isotope Solutions allow for comprehensive isotope analysis of nitrogen and oxygen within intact molecular nitrate ions. This includes non-mass-dependent oxygen isotope relationships and doubly substituted isotopologue abundances (i.e., clumped isotope effects).
