Mass Spectrometry
Mass spectrometers are used for detailed mass compositional analysis of a sample, elucidating the mass-to-charge ratio of a sample constituents, from small molecules to very large proteins. Generally, MS instruments can be differentiated by their mass analyzer, including ion trap, quadrupole, time-of-flight (TOF), isotope ratio and ion mobility mass spectrometers. Increased resolution and sensitivity can be achieved with tandem mass spectrometers (MS/MS) such as a qTOF or a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. More specialized forms of MS exist, such as inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) for elemental analysis, isotope ratio MS for dating and tracing purposes.
