New year, new seals: Meet the lab products that have earned the first Seals of Quality of 2022

There are four levels of Seal of Quality — Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze — which are allocated to products based on the number of reviews they receive from scientists and the average rating of those reviews

The latest laboratory instruments to earn a prized Seal of Quality have been announced in recognition of outstanding feedback received from scientists globally.

Seals of Quality recognize the top 0.1% of products that consistently receive the highest customer review ratings on SelectScience® and are designed to help scientists and healthcare professionals worldwide immediately recognize the instruments and services their peers rate the highest.

Top dog

Zymo Research is no stranger to Seals of Quality, having achieved 10 awards last year alone, and it seems that 2022 will be no different. Kicking off this year’s announcement, Zymo Research has achieved a Platinum Seal of Quality for its Direct-zol™ RNA Miniprep Plus, the first Platinum to be awarded to the company.

The Direct-zol™ RNA Miniprep Plus has received over 200 reviews, with a respectable average star rating of 4.8 out of 5. One reviewer, Elias Malek of the University of Nevada, commented: “Great results, will stick with Zymo for a while.” Fellow reviewer, Manas Agrawal of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, also commented that: “Everyone should know about the great Zymo support team who helps when needed as far as technicalities are concerned.”

The success for Zymo doesn’t stop there. The Zymoclean™ Gel DNA Recovery Kit has also earned a Gold Seal of Quality for receiving 100 reviews with an impressive star rating of 4.9 out of 5. Tessa Shates of University of California, Riverside, described the kit as “essential for my research”. Zymo Research remains the most successful Seal of Quality recipient to date, with 11 awards in total.

Continuing successes

It was just a few months ago, when we announced that newcomers to the Seals of Quality, NanoEntek, had won a Silver Seal of Quality for its Automated Cell Counters. However, NanoEntek has already reached the next milestone, earning the Automated Cell Counters a Gold Seal of Quality, for receiving 100 reviews with an average star rating of 4.8 out of 5. Reviewer Thomas MacMurrough, of Specific Biologics, commented that the counters are: “Powerful and easy-to-use equipment we can’t live without!”

A new Bronze Seal of Quality goes to Malvern Panalytical for the Empyrean - XRD. Overall, the product has received 51 reviews and an average star rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Reviewer Alejandro Capapé Miralles, of Institut Català d'Investigació Química (ICIQ), commented that: “The Empyrean is an undoubtedly powerful tool for solid state characterization.” This is the second Seal of Quality earned by Malvern Panalytical products. The Mastersizer 3000 received a Gold Seal of Quality back in 2020.

Latest newcomer

Two brand new Bronze Seals of Quality have also been earned by Metrohm, the first to ever be awarded to the manufacturer. The 901 Titrando for Karl Fischer Titration and the 913 pH Meter have both received over 50 reviews with an average star rating of 4.5 and 4.7 out of 5 stars respectfully.

Commenting on the 913 pH Meter, reviewer Samita Saini, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, remarked: “The equipment is highly accurate, easy to use, and it is easy to maintain. The after-purchase services are good and pocket friendly.”
