The new Thermo Scientific™ Multidrop™ Pico™ 1 and Pico™ 8 Digital Dispensers offer precise dispensing with volumes between 11pL and 10µL. With it’s easy to use PicoIT software and ability to dispense drug compounds researchers can quickly and easily create drug dose response and drug synergy experiments (combine this functionality with the Thermo Scientific™ Multidrop™ Combi’s cell dispensing capability for a more complete drug synergy dispensing solution). In other applications, miniaturize qPCR reaction volumes, using ten times less sample and reagent than traditional methods, as low as 11pL or eliminate the manual task of serial dilution and improve accuracy and precision while saving reagent costs.

Enabling drug synergy and drug dose response assays
Developing assays to assess the effectiveness of drug combinations or different doses of single drugs in vitro is an increasingly important area of drug and anticancer therapy research. In developing high throughput assays, researchers face the double challenge of quickly dispensing both viable cells and drug combinations. In particular, the dispensing of two or more compounds to create a dose-response matrix can be both labour intensive and compound expensive.
Miniaturizing qPCR assays and simplifying standard curve preparations
This application note demonstrates a successfully miniaturized qPCR assay with the Thermo Scientific™ Multidrop™ Pico 8 Digital Dispenser and PicoIT 8 software. In three simple steps, the PicoIT 8 software enables the setup of a qPCR assay plate including titrations of reagents needed for a standard curve. Then, with the Multidrop Pico 8 Digital Dispenser, the reagents for a miniaturized volume (5 µL reaction) in a 384-well qPCR assay plate are dispensed, mixed, and ready to be placed on the Applied Biosystems™ QuantStudio™ Real-Time PCR System for amplification. The results show how the Multidrop Pico 8 Digital Dispenser and PicoIT 8 software allows users to easily set up a miniaturized Applied Biosystems™ TaqMan® qPCR assay plate with successful amplification of the input cDNA.
