contrAA® Series — Atomic Absorption. Redefined.

The atomic absorption spectrometers of the contrAA® series are the only commercially available instruments for High-Resolution Continuum Source AAS (HR-CS AAS). As a link between standard AAS instruments and ICP-OES spectrometers contrAA® combines the best of two worlds: rapid sequential and simultaneous multi-element analysis, ease of handling and manageable costs.

With a Xenon lamp emitting a continuous spectrum at high intensity, any element and wavelength can readily be analyzed whenever the requirement occurs – the contrAA® turned AAS into a true multi-element technique with unmatched flexibility. A high-resolution spectrometer with CCD detector produces a highly resolved absorption spectrum for each sample, providing deeper insight about the sample as well as visual proof of correct signal evaluation.

With features like fast sequential and simultaneous multi-element analysis, including semi-quantitative overview screening of unknown samples, and analysis of non-metals contrAA® 800 opens up new application fields previously reserved to other, much more expensive technologies. Superior correction algorithms for background and spectral interferences take productivity and accuracy of AAS to a new level – all while preserving its simple, robust and low-cost operation.

With its automatic atomizer switching and two-dimensional atomizer alignment, the contrAA® 800 is a versatile all-rounder that comes in a modern, space-saving design.

contrAA® 800 series — superior technologies guarantee for excellent results:

  • Multi Element
One light source for fast sequential and simultaneous multi-element analysis
  • High-Resolution Optics
    Interference-free analysis and highest precision
  • HD Spectrum
High-resolution 3D spectra display for detailed spectral information
  • Dynamic Mode
Extended measurement range of up to 5 orders of magnitude

Complemented by a wide range of accessories including autosamplers and online-dilutors, flow-injection and hydride generation systems the contrAA® 800 is the most versatile AAS available today.

Available configurations:

  • contrAA® 800 F
    For flame and hydride technology
  • contrAA® 800 G
For graphite furnace technique, solid AA®, and HydrEA
  • contrAA® 800 D
For flame and graphite furnace technique, solid AA®, hydride, and HydrEA

Seven reasons why contrAA® 800 should be part of every lab:

Comfortable handling

Maximum flexibility

Accelerated processes

Best Precision

Low space requirements

Long service life

Decades of experience

Determination of PFAS in soil and sewage sludge as a sum parameter EOF (Extractable organically bound fluorine)

PFAS are per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances with persistent properties, which have therefore been and still are used in everyday objects (e.g., water-repellent coatings for textiles and paper, cookware). Due to their multiple uses, PFAS are currently found in numerous environmental samples. Besides monitoring of surface water or contaminated soils, control at wastewater treatment plants is of increasing interest. Since PFAS are very resistant to conventional biological treatment in wastewater plants, they can not be removed from wastewater without a special treatment step and are therefore often found in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants or in sewage sludge. In this application note, Analytik Jena shows that the quantification of PFAS in different solid samples as a sum parameter can be carried out very quickly and easily with the described EOF method using the contrAA 800.

Determination of Element Contents in Wine Using HR-CS Flame AAS

This application note describes a straightforward and fast analysis of wine using the contrAA® 800. Atomic absorption spectrometry is the most commonly used technique for metal determination in wines. Wine consists of a complex matrix including water, sugar, alcohol as well as a great variety of organic and inorganic components. Some of these components include metals, such as copper and zinc that are essential biometals, however, the majority of them have carcinogenic or toxic effects even at trace levels. For these reasons, it is of great importance to constantly monitor the levels of certain elements.

Automated Ultra-Trace Analysis using the contrAA® Dynamic Mode

This technical note details some of the key benefits featured in the contrAA® Dynamic Mode. For ultra-trace analysis the contrAA® yields detection limits up to an order of magnitude better than traditional AAS technology. The contrAA® 800 series Dynamic Mode automates many key operations, enabling the connection of multiple calibration curves to provide a wide-range calibration over up to five orders of magnitude. This allows measurements of ultra-trace- and major elements in the same sample with a single method, thus offering a dynamic range similar to that of ICP-OES instruments.

Application NoteFood and Beverage

Determination of Metals in Dietary Supplements Using HR-CS Solid AAS

The consumption of dietary supplements is widely spread and on the rise. These dietary supplements are generally used without prescriptions, proper counseling or any awareness of their potential health risks. To ensure the safety of these products and increase the awareness of the citizen to benefit from these dietary supplements it is of great importance to perform diligent analysis for (toxic) metals present in dietary supplements. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) is a robust, reliable, and sensitive analytical technique which is well suited for the determination of heavy metals. This analytical technique is therefore widely employed for this purpose.
