The MasSpec Pen in the hands of surgeons
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific explores the potential benefits of mass spectrometers over microscopes in surgical histopathology. By utilizing spectra instead of traditional stains, surgeons and pathologists could achieve real-time identification of cancerous versus normal tissue, leading to reduced surgical time and enhanced patient care. The conventional method involves freezing, sectioning, and staining tissue samples, followed by microscopic analysis, a process taking 15–45 minutes per sample. However, this approach has limitations, including artifacts and complexities in certain tissues like pancreatic cancer. Mass spectrometry offers a promising alternative for faster and more accurate intraoperative tissue analysis.
Five reasons to implement LC-MS platforms for your laboratory developed tests
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific discusses the expanding applications of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) technology in fields like endocrinology, toxicology, pharmacology, and therapeutic drug monitoring. The note highlights the rising interest in using LC-MS for laboratory developed tests (LDTs) due to the growing demand for fast and accurate analyses in clinical diagnostics. Despite the benefits of LC-MS, clinical diagnostic laboratories face challenges in method development, optimization, and implementation to meet routine assay requirements and scientific goals. Limited options exist for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) compliant instruments suitable for LDT development and optimization in these laboratories.
