The BRANDplates Insert System, co-developed with the Fraunhofer Society, offers an innovative expansion of the BRAND cell culture product line. The new Insert system consists of 24-well standard and 6-well specialized plates and strips of hanging cell culture inserts for applications such as co-culture, migration/invasion assays, or the automated in vitro preparation of human tissues (3D cell culture).
Unique features such as insert guide grooves and side feeding ports ensure insert stability and prevent tissue or cell disruption during media changes, especially with pipetting robots. Furthermore, the inserts may be smooth walled or feature inlet channels (inlet opening system) to increase the ease of media change for long term cell or tissue culture.
The polystyrene (PS) plates are sterile, and untreated or cell culture treated dependent upon application. The insert strips consist of 4 wells per strip and the membrane may be polycarbonate (PC) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for different imaging requirements. The pore sizes of the membranes are available in multiple pore sizes (0.4 µm, 1 µm, 3 µm, 8 µm) to allow for the movement or inhibition of molecules of varying sizes. Altogether the components of the new Insert System can be configured for highly customized uses ensuring an efficient solution for manual and automated cell and tissue culture work.
Features:
- 24-well standard and 6-well specialized multiwell sterile plates, untreated or cell culture surface
- 4 place strips of divisible inserts with PC or PET membranes and 4 pore sizes (0.4 µm, 1 µm, 3 µm, 8 µm)
- Hanging inserts with guide grooves to ensure insert stability
- Unique side feeding ports to allow changing of media without disturbing cells or tissue
- Available with or without side channels (inlet opening system) for rapid and consistent media changes
- Lids with condensation rings to prevent well contamination

Reconstruction of Human Epidermis Using BRANDplates® Insert System
In the past decade new cell and tissue culture technologies have been generated to comply with the European legislation that restricts animal experiments to a minimum. Particularly, the improvement of culture conditions for reconstructed human full thickness skin and epidermis equivalents based on cell culture inserts, lead to a successful commercialization of these models. Today, with the help of artificial human tissues, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry carry out tolerance, toxicology and irritation studies daily. In spite of every progress made in terms of media compositions and supplements, setup and handling of organotypic cultures still requires a lot of time and expertise.

The Skin Factory – Automated Tissue Culture
Watch this video to learn about an innovative system for culturing human tissue developed by the Fraunhofer Institute, and using the BRANDplates® cell culture Insert System. Comprised of 3 automated, biologically controlled modules, the factory can produce 3 layered skin samples for cosmetic, chemical and pharmaceutical assessment and impact analyses. Hear how it is hoped such skin and tissue factories could one day be used to grow replacement organs for human transplant.
