Shimadzu, one of the world-leaders in analytical instrumentation, introduces its new prominence UFLC-XR, an HPLC system for ul-trafast analysis, at Analytica 2008. As productivity is a key criterion in today’s laboratory environment, high sample throughput and fast separations are crucial requirements of modern HPLC systems. The new prominence UFLC-XR was developed to provide ultrafast sepa-rations while simultaneously maintaining ultrahigh resolution.

The new system also enables fast analyses involving highly viscous solvent mixtures such as water/methanol. The new prominence UFLC-XR, consequently, offers a wide application range for fast and high-resolution analyses.

A special feature of the prominence UFLC-XR is its performance, even at system pressures of up to 660 bar. In particular values for reproducibility, low sample carryover, and injection precision of very low sample volumes are superior.

Conversion kits for upgrading existing systems
An additional distinctive feature is that existing prominence systems can be easily and quickly upgraded to the high-pressure prominence UFLC-XR version. For this purpose, Shimadzu offers conversion kits enabling users to upgrade a conventional Shimadzu HPLC sys¬tem into a 660 bar version.

New generation of HPLC columns
Shimadzu also offers a new generation of HPLC columns. The Shim-pack XR-ODSII columns, packed with 2.2 µm particles, have been developed especially for applications at high system pressures of up to 660 bar. These columns enable ultrafast separations at high resolution. The columns are available in lengths of 75 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm with internal diameters of 2 mm and 3 mm respec¬tively.

Prominence UFLC-XR

The Prominence UFLC Series is an ultra-high-speed LC that achieves both ultra-high-speed analysis and ultra-high separation, based on high analysis precision and reliability. Utilizing features of the Prominence UFLC, which offered high speed as well as high analysis accuracy and reliability, thereby increasing analysis cost-efficiency, we have developed the Prominence UFLCXR, which achieves greater data quality by means of higher separation performance. While maintaining the high analysis accuracy and reliability cultivated with the Prominence series by using a high-speed separation column and optimizing the system, we have increased separation performance to a level greater than that of conventional LC. The ability to reliably perform the high-separation, high-sensitivity detection of trace compounds is required. Improving separation performance by simply increasing the column length also increases the analysis time, which reduces analysis efficiency. With the Prominence UFLC, high-speed analysis while maintaining a high degree of analysis accuracy and reliability is possible and with the Prominence UFLCXR, greater separation performance is attained. In order to achieve the ultimate in high separation performance, column efficiency has been improved by optimizing the balance between the particle diameter of the XR-ODS and XRII-ODS high-speed separation column and the column length, and the system has been optimized to attain the highest possible level of column performance. The combination of the Prominence UFLCXR and a Shim-pack XR-ODS II column (length: 150 mm) achieves a level of separation performance equivalent to that of at least a 250-mm column containing packing material with a particle diameter of 5 µm. The wide dynamic range of the SPD-20A detector enables the high-separation, high-sensitivity detection of fine peaks, such as those obtained for minute quantities of impurities in pharmaceuticals, and thereby enables highly reliable analysis in which the slightest presence of impurities is not missed. Also, the low-carryover SIL-20AXR autosampler supports high-accuracy analysis.Prominence UFLC-XR Features: Excellent Reproducibility and Low Sample Carryover Included a high-performance pump, an autosampler capable of a high level of injection reproducibility. The analysis time was a quarter of that required by a general-purpose LC.
