Third generation liquid handling automation with Eppendorf expertise

As lab workflows become more complex, automation is helping researchers overcome the limitations of manual pipetting by improving reproducibility, efficiency, and throughput. Imran-Ali Vasi, Commercial Product Manager at Eppendorf, shares how the epMotion 5073 streamlines liquid handling across applications including PCR, NGS, ELISA, and sample preparation, enabling reliable and standardized results while reducing hands-on time. With user-friendly software and flexible modules, the epMotion 5073 delivers end-to-end automation, helping labs transition from manual processes to efficient, high-quality experimental workflows.

This SelectScience interview was recorded at SLAS Europe 2026.

Lab work and application areas in general are becoming more complex as we evolve and as new technologies and new workflows emerge. Manual pipetting and liquid handling just can't keep up with that demand due to the variability, the time it takes, the cost and the waste as well. Automation removes these as it standardizes the process, it increases efficiency, it saves time and it saves cost ultimately as well, which means time can be better spent elsewhere on study planning, data analysis, and just having a break from the lab.

We're in the third generation of automation now through multichannel pipettes, electronic pipettes, and now automation. Automation is making labs a lot more efficient and increasing their productivity as well because now they can take on the work that they were previously turning away or they couldn't compete in a certain area because they didn't have the resources to do so. With the automation, you have that reproducibility, there's no variability. It's simple, it's easy to use, it's straightforward, especially with the Eppendorf portfolio.

Eppendorf has been around for more than 80 years now through supplying consumables, prepared centrifuges, fridges, freezers and now of course automation. We have systems for entry-level automation with the epMotion 96 Flex and then we have the epMotion 5073 and 5075 models which is benchtop automation so you can load your samples and walk away. This supports application areas including NGS, purification, ELISA, PCR, DPCR, any experimental design, you name it. If you're doing it manually, we can automate it for you.

With the epMotion 5073, you get a volume range of 0.2 microlitres to one mil, and this is done with different pipettor heads, which the instrument will change automatically depending on what it needs, which means you don't have to manually intervene and change these which saves you time you can load samples and walk away. It has liquid level detection for your reagents and your buffers so it'll do a pre-check before it starts to run which means you don't have to baby the system you can just load and go you can double stack tips so you can load tips on top of one another with our tip holder which means you can therefore process more samples once the tips have been used it will discard the used rack in the waste bin.

Again, no manual intervention, it's completely automated user-friendly software. So we have epBlue which you program the instrument on and use it do its maintenance and whatnot on there. It's simple, straightforward, user-friendly, and it will tell you exactly what to do or what to put and where. We have a range of different modules. So we have the thermal module, we have an NGS module that comes with magnetic racks and thermomixer adapters as well. Again, it adapts to your workflow and gives you that end-to-end automation rather than just partial.

Like I've said, if you're doing something manually at this moment in time, we can automate it for you. Automation is becoming the foundation for scalable data-driven sites and Eppendorf for allowing users of any level to have access to this.

These automated pipetting systems are perfectly suited for PCR and qPCR setup, nucleic acid purification as well as low-throughput NGS library preparation yet they retain the flexibility for use as open platforms for diverse automated liquid handling applications. The epMotion 5073 series automates and simplifies traditionally complex, labor-intensive pipetting tasks, saving time and improving the reliability and reproducibility of results.
