Filtration Performance of Permanently Hydrophilized Polyethylene Membranes

21 Jan 2015

Lydall Performance Materials has developed a new generation of hydrophilic Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMwPE) membranes (Nylopor™ membranes and Evopor™ membranes) tailored for high purity filtration applications. These membranes show excellent hydrophilicity and durability combined with a low level of extractables, and show no evidence of cell lysis or toxicity. This white paper outlines the testing of these membranes and their possible applications.

Solupor® HF Membrane

Lydall Performance Materials

A next generation microporous membrane for a full range of consumer electronic applications. Solupor® membrane has a unique combination of high porosity of >80% and low thickness, which makes it possible to achieve very low electrical resistance in capacitor applications. With its superior mechanical properties, microporous structure, and smooth surface, Solupor membrane is an ideal substrate for the construction of proton exchange membrane commonly used in fuel cells. Features: Gamma sterilization compatibility High air flow / low pressure drop Biocompatible (USP CLass IV) High membrane integrity Excellent chemical resistance Benefits: No Failures from brittleness Reduction of Filter size used Regulatory compliance Durable products Usable in stringent environments Applications: Consumer Electronic Devices Lightweight Batteries Super capacitors Fuel cells

Nylopor™ Membrane

Lydall Performance Materials

Delivers uniform wet out and added strength during use in critical filtration applications. Nylopor™ membrane is a naturally hydrophilic membrane, engineered with a polyethylene support based on Lydall’s microporous Solupor® membrane. Nylopor membrane’s hydrophilic characteristics provide uniform wet out and added strength during use in critical filtration applications. The membrane is comprised of nylon 4, 6 to provide increased chemical compatibility and heat resistance as compared to other hydrophilic nylon membranes.Designed with a tightly controlled microporous structure, Nylopor membrane delivers superior dimensional strength, higher flux, and ease in handling during cutting, pleating, and sealing in filtration device manufacturing. The membrane is available in roll widths up to 60cm as well as custom cut sheets and disks for the required application.Features: Microporous support Nylon 4,6 Biocompatible Low extractables Benefits: Higher flux Increased chemical compatibility Use in medical applications No unintended additives Applications: Critical Process Filtration Analytical Chemistry Microbiological Analysis Pharmaceutical Processing Microelectronics Manufacturing Chemical Filtration Medical Devices

Evopor™ Membrane

Lydall Performance Materials

Provides an ultra-hydrophilic platform for critical process filtration. Evopor™ membrane is a naturally hydrophilic, supported membrane manufactured to provide uniform wet out and maintain its strength during use in critical filtration applications. Unlike polyethersulfone (PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, Evopor membranes are comprised of Ethyl Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) to provide an unparalleled ultra-hydrophilic surface. The support is based on Lydall’s Solupor® membrane and delivers high porosity, superior dimensional strength, higher flux, and ease in handling during cutting, pleating, and sealing in filtration device manufacturing. The membrane is available in roll widths up to 60cm as well as custom cut sheets and disks for the required application.Features: Microporous support Low particulates EVOH composition Benefits: Higher flux Biocompatible Ultra-hydrophilic surface Applications: Critical Process Filtration Analytical Chemistry Food & Beverage Processing Medical Devices Pharmaceutical Processing
