Exploring PROTACs in drug discovery and development

Proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs) are able to degrade disease-causing proteins by hijacking the cells own degradation pathway. These molecules are therefore changing the drug discovery landscape by enabling targeting for previously 'undruggable' proteins.

Explore advanced LC-MS bioanalytical solutions that can support your PROTAC workflow to confidently quantify and accelerate development with sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility.

Lower regulatory limits prompt innovation in PFAS testing

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a diverse group of chemicals that represent a significant threat to the ecosystem and human health are covering the media with focus on the current regulatory changes due to their persistence in the environment.

In this case study, discover how the SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS anticipates that the PFAS testing field will continue its evolution, and discover how they have utilized technologies from Waters, including the Waters Xevo™ TQ Absolute Mass Spectrometer, to perform rigorous testing on food matrices, to avoid PFAS contamination.

Addressing the global challenge of PFAS contamination

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of synthetic chemicals that pose significant environmental and health challenges due to their persistence and bioaccumulation. PFAS testing is one of the most pressing issues facing analytical labs today. As global attention grows, so does the demand for reliable answers.

Technologies such as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) can be essential for assessing PFAS contamination accurately. Discover how advanced LC-MS/MS and HRMS technologies are helping scientists and regulators tackle PFAS challenges head-on.

From sample preparation to data analysis, explore how Waters Corporation provides the tools needed to measure, manage, and mitigate the impact of PFAS, driving scientific progress and regulatory compliance.

Application NoteSpectroscopy

Improved sensitivity for the detection of PFAS in environmental water samples

Analysis of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is now an essential part of water testing programs and is becoming a regular requirement for monitoring in environment and food sources. As regulations continue to be created and updated, the requirements for method sensitivity have become essential. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is one tool that can be utilized to enhance the sensitivity of a method by enriching the sample prior to injection. The alternative is to use a direct injection method that relies on the sensitivity performance of the mass spectrometer.

In this application note, Waters demonstrates the Xevo TQ Absolute tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer for the analysis of PFAS in environmental water samples. Analysis was completed on four water sample matrices: drinking water, groundwater, surface water, and influent wastewater. Method detection limits of 33 compounds (11 carboxylates, 10 sulfonates, 8 precursors, and 4 emerging) were determined to range from 0.8–2.0 ng/L.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) testing

Waters presents the PFAS testing application notebook. The role of food safety, environmental protection, and drinking water testing laboratories has never been more critical. Pollution, safety, sustainability, and quality are of major concern to the public, governments, food industry, and water companies. This eBook includes the latest application notes from Waters, supporting the development and implementation of new testing methods and technologies for the analysis of PFAS in:

  • Surface and ground waters
  • Soil and sediments
  • Drinking water
  • Biological fluids
  • Food

Analytical workflow solutions for PFAS analyses

Environmental contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and rising concerns about its long-term impacts on the general population, have increased the urgency for wider PFAS analysis. Initially the focus was solely on environmental matrices but has now expanded into food analysis due to the risk to consumers. Accordingly, regulations and guidance documents have been released to assure the quality of water bodies, drinking water and most recently also for food and feed. Here, Waters describes the workflow of its sample-to-result approach for PFAS analysis that can be incorporated into any lab whether the focus is food, water or environmental.

Overcoming the sensitivity vs. robustness trade-off in mass spectrometry

Dr. Rowan Moore from Waters Corporation introduces the Xevo™ TQ Absolute XR Mass Spectrometer and explores how it can be used for a range of pharmaceutical, food and environmental applications, such as PFAS testing. Discover how this system eliminates the traditional compromise between sensitivity and robustness with the StepWave XR ion guide which has proven to maintain high sensitivity across tens of thousands of injections, even with the most challenging sample matrices.

Regional drug use trends aid fight against evolving opioid epidemic

The opioid epidemic in the US is a severe public health crisis, with increasing misuse, addiction, and overdose deaths. Central to tackling opioid dependence are dedicated treatment plans using opioid substitute therapy. However, as the crises evolves into its now fourth wave, different regions are exposed to different concoctions of drugs and so a more personalized approach to evaluating compliance with therapy is required.

Speaking with Dr. JP Canner, Chief Scientific Officer and Laboratory Director at Gravity Diagnostics, we explore how this state-of-the-art CAP-accredited and CLIA-certified laboratory is expanding its drug testing menus to respond to regional drug use patterns seen as part of its clinical toxicology services.
