When it works, it's great, but it goes down too often for my liking
Chemistry analyzer
Our Ortho 5600 was a replacement for a 5,1. We had the 5,1 for many years and had little to no issues with it. We had to replace it due to support being discontinued. We have had several issues with this new analyzer since its installation. However, we have an excellent FSE (Brian) that takes good care of us and helps all of our needs.

Chemistry
I was a user of wet chemistry analyzers for many years and was very hesitant to switch to a dry chemistry method. I was not confident in this technology and looked for ways that it would not compare. I can tell you after 3 years of working with and managing the Vitros 5600 I am a proponent of this technology and sing its praises every day. The ease of use and long calibration periods are just two of the things that make my life as a tech much easier.

Accurate, reliable and time saving.
Analyse Serum, Plasma, Urine and whole Blood Samples
I have been working on it for last 5 years. Very easy to operate, smooth functioning, rapid results in Biochemistry section ( Microslide Technology) and results are more accurate and reliable than the others that I've been using.

Blood and urine chemistry and IA
Field service engineers are awesome especially Michael. Most troubleshooting can be done over the phone saving down time and delays. Remote access to the analyzer allows distant monitoring of the system to recognize problems that may cause an issue before it happens. Very receptive and response time is great.

We have operated 2 analyzers in our small critical access hospital lab for about 5 years. We love the 5600 do to: up time, ease of use, no need for external water source, both platforms on one analyzer, and ease of maintenance.

Clinical chemistry
The Vitros 5600 is a user friendly analyzer with an interface that is easy to learn, with the same basic principle as older versions of the machine. Ease of use from reagent loading to waste disposal. Loading of samples with the labelled carrier rack makes the whole process simple. The machine can run high volumes of samples within a very short turnaround time. The dry chemistry method has a very good benefit in that it reduces cross contamination by using disposable pipet tips. It also has a low maintenance cost. The barcode reading system and its connectivity to LIS make it easier for processing and releasing of results. This also give less error during the process. Reagent and maintenance costs are reasonable and the contract with the company is very good in terms of supply, maintenance and sales. This is a very efficient integrated analyzer with very good quality control output and minimal calibration.

Good instrument but needs improvements on ease of use.
Chemistry and immunology
The instrument produces quality results. However the software and ease of storing duplicate lots of test, calibrators and qc is not optimal. Spend a lot of time calibrating and reviewing QC.

Integrated chemistry, immunoassay testing platform
If you are looking for a great, stable chemistry machine, this is what you are looking for. This chemistry/ immunoassay analyzer is the best that I have found for speed, stability, and ease of use. It uses dry slide technology for the chemistry assays which eliminates the need for water systems. The dry slides are super stable with calibrations that last for 6 months instead of a week or two. The after the sale care from Ortho is great too. They help every step of the way to get it set up. They have a great tech support system, and e-conectivity can help find problems before they start. I have had a great experience with Ortho Clinical Diagnostics!
