Microglial cells that could be a promise are not

"Unfortunately, finding a microglial cell line is difficult and expensive. Our group attempted to use a commercial cell line, the ATCC HMC3 cells. They use EMEM instead of DMEM otherwise not too difficult to work with. They do not grow all that fast but they do proliferate over time. The problem though, is that both of the users in the laboratory noticed that after about passage 9, they do not look healthy. This is from two independent researchers, if they did not cost so much this would not be a major issue but they are incredibly expensive. Not great."
