Bringing together powerful technologies to discover, identify and measure a broad range of molecular targets with one system.

Combination of advanced Mass Spectrometry imaging technologies
A choice of complementary ionization techniques provides flexibility and delivers multi-layered, information-rich data from a single sample.

Multiple Experiments with the Same Sample
The non-destructive nature of DESI means that a single tissue section can be analyzed multiple times, for example at different spatial resolutions or in different polarities, without significant degradation of signal or modification of chemical signature.

MS imaging with the power of Ion Mobility
SYNAPT HDMS enables the powerful combination of MALDI and DESI imaging with ion mobility-mass spectrometry. This allows the gas phase separation of ions by compound class and charge in an MS imaging experiment, providing a level of selectivity that would not be possible with mass resolution alone.

Available on IMS MS/MS or MS/MS
Waters QTof systems provide the ideal platform for MS imaging, with superior performance, proven robustness and reliability, and the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and future needs. Highly efficient fragmentation is achieved via low energy collision induced dissociation (CID), while orthogonal geometry means that key performance attributes such as resolution and accurate mass are unaffected by changes in sample surface topography.

Features & Benefits:

  • More comprehensive, detailed information than from any individual imaging technique
  • Maximum information from minimal sample
  • Definitively and objectively interpret molecular distribution information
  • Intuitive, integrated software suite covering the full MS imaging workflow
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing day-to-day priorities and future needs
  • Single vendor for total system support

Generation of Multiple Images from a Single Tissue Section with Dual Polarity Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

This application note demonstrates that by optimizing DESI conditions, a wealth of molecular information can be accessed from a single tissue section, without the need to substantially alter the analysis conditions. Mass spec imaging of tissue sections was accomplished by using a SYNAPT® G2-Si HDMS Mass Spectrometer equipped with a 2D-DESI source. Data was generated and analyzed using HDI Software v1.3.

Utility of Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) for Mass Spectrometry Imaging

DESI imaging uses a charged jet of solvent to deposit micro-droplets onto a surface where analytes are extracted and desorbed into the gas phase at ambient pressure and temperature. This application note describes the DESI imaging technique as applied to mass spectrometry imaging using time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers, such as the SYNAPT® G2-Si or the Xevo® G2-XS.
