Description

PerkinElmer’s multi-award-winning NexION® 5000 Multi-Quadrupole ICP-MS is innovatively designed to meet and exceed the demanding requirements of ultra-trace elemental applications. It takes ICP-MS performance beyond traditional triple-quad and high-resolution ICP-MS to deliver exceptionally low background equivalent concentrations and outstanding detection limits, key to ensuring accurate, repeatable results. Plus, the NexION 5000 provides superior interference removal, phenomenal stability and unmatched matrix tolerance, for performance you can rely on.

Proprietary features of the NexION 5000 ICP-MS include:

  • Four quadrupoles, providing four stages of mass separation: Quadrupole Ion Deflector (Q0) directs ions to the entrance of the first mass filter; Transmission Analyzer Quadrupole 1 (Q1, full-sized for <0.7 amu mass resolution), acts as a mass filter or as an ion guide to direct ions to the Quadrupole Universal Cell; Quadrupole Universal Cell (Q2), empowered by dynamic bandpass tuning, prevents side reactions with residual reaction gases in the cell; Transmission Analyzer Quadrupole 2 (Q3, full-sized for <0.7 amu mass resolution), acts as a mass filter or as an ion guide to direct ions to the detector
  • Extended Dynamic Range (EDR) allows to run both high- and low-concentration analytes in a single analytical run, resulting in fewer re-runs
  • Triple Cone Interface with patented OmniRing™ combined with Quadrupole Ion Deflector deliver no maintenance beyond cones, for continual operation and improved stability
  • 34 MHz free-running RF generator with revolutionary LumiCoil™ RF load coil, which does not require water or gas cooling, so maintenance-free, eliminating the need to replace plasma load coils
  • Syngistix™ for ICP-MS software provides an intuitive interface that mirrors your workflow, with left-to-right, icon-based navigation that guides you through your analysis. Plus, it’s a cross-platform solution, easing the transition from technique to technique.

The NexION 5000 ICP-MS is available in two configurations:

  • The NexION 5000 Cleanroom ICP-MS is suitable for cleanroom applications, designed specifically for those requiring the highest level of cleanliness and the lowest background equivalent concentrations (<1 ppt, even in hot plasma)
  • The NexION 5000 Non-Cleanroom ICP-MS is recommended for applications which do not require the use of a cleanroom, but which still benefit from the unmatched sensitivity and interference removal capabilities of the NexION 5000 series

Interferences in ICP-MS: Do we still have to worry about them?

In this application note, PerkinElmer gives an overview with experimental data on interferences in ICP-MS. When the first commercial ICP mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) was introduced in 1983, it was of general opinion that this new technology freed analysts from worries about interferences. Now, many years later, we know that interferences do exist in ICP-MS, but we have a good understanding of them. Over the years, new techniques and technologies have been developed to reduce or eliminate them.

In routine ICP-MS analyses, two types of interferences exist: non-spectral (physical and matrix effects) and spectral (isobaric and polyatomic). Download this application note to look in more detail at both non-spectral and spectral interferences.

Novel interference removal opportunities with the NexION 5000 ICP-MS

In this application note, PerkinElmer provides experimental data on novel interference removal opportunities using the NexION 5000® ICP-MS. Multi-quadrupole technology, in combination with controlled reactions in the Universal Cell (UCT) of the NexION 5000 ICP-MS, has opened new possibilities for spectral interference removal. As was described in the technical note “Interferences in ICP-MS: Do we still have to worry about them?”, the MS/MS and mass shift modes, in conjunction with three cell analytical modes (Std, KED and DRC), can solve many challenging problems, not previously possible using a single quadrupole system. This work is a continuation of a discussion on spectral interference removal and presents dynamic reactions with three gases (O2, NH3 and CH4) that, in tandem with multi-quadrupole technology, are a powerful tool in interference management on the NexION 5000 ICP-MS.
