Product news

Thermo Electron Corporation, the world leader in analytical instruments, today unveiled the Sorvall® WX Ultra Series floor standing centrifuges.

Available in 80k, 90k and 100k rpm models, the state-of-the-art ultracentrifuges pack cutting-edge technology and simple operation into a sleek, compact design for cell and molecular biology, genomic, and proteomic applications. The small footprint, reduced deck height, and whisper-quiet operation make these advanced centrifuges ideal for direct placement in the lab, while compatibility with the majority of popular ultra-rotors makes the Sorvall WX Ultra Series cost-effective and easy to integrate.

Based on Thermo’s highly successful and reliable Sorvall centrifuge platform, the powerful Sorvall WX Ultra Series centrifuges can generate RCF’s up to 802,010 x g. An intuitive, color touch-screen interface enables straightforward protocol set-up and storage. Safety and time-management are significantly improved through a series of innovative features, such as rotor life management, run scheduling, automatic rpm/rcf conversion, step-mode operation and delayed start/stop functions. In addition, standalone run-simulation software significantly reduces time-consuming practice runs.

Advanced design has also been applied to the broad range of rotors and tubes. The tubes can be visually balanced allowing accelerated sample preparation. The rotors ensure easier and more secure loading, giving the user greater peace of mind. The Sorvall WX series centrifuges can also utilize a continuous-flow rotor allowing the processing of many liters per hour, making the new centrifuges ideal for biotechnology and pharmaceutical scale-up processes.

The Sorvall WX series is designed to be environmentally friendly with reduced power consumption and CFC/HCFC-free refrigeration. Security is assured by optional extras such as a user password lockout facility and HEPA filters. Together with Thermo’s existing Sorvall Discovery M120SE and M150SE micro-ultracentrifuges, as well as the new RC-6 Plus super-speed centrifuge, the Sorvall WX Ultra series completes a comprehensive range of high-speed centrifuge solutions from Thermo.

CentrifugesCentrifuges are used to separate particulates suspended in a liquid via the application of a centrifugal force including cells, macromolecules, nanoparticles and precipitates. Centrifuges come in three sizes: microcentrifuges, benchtop and floor-standing centrifuges, depending on the volume and number of samples that require separation. When choosing a centrifuge, consider its maximum separation power indicated by its relative centrifugal force (RCF) value. Low force centrifuges reach a maximum RCF of 8,000 g, high-force centrifuges can reach maximum RCF values of 80,000 g. For extremely high forces, consider ultracentrifuges (up to 800,000 g). Refrigerated and vacuum centrifuges also known as concentrators are available for more specialized applications. A range of volumes are available for centrifuge tubes and microfuge tubes, depending on sample sizes.
