MP Biomedicals have announced the launch of two new high-performance DNA extraction kits – SPINeasy™ DNA Kit for Soil and MagBeads FastDNA™ Kit for Feces – to advance microbiome research.

SPINeasy™ DNA Kit for Soil employs spin column technology, proprietary lysis buffers to protect the DNA and specially formulated buffers to remove inhibitors, to extract genomic DNA of high yield and purity from the diverse and difficult soil samples.

MagBeads FastDNA™ Kit for Feces allows high yield and quick isolation of genomic DNA from fecal samples. It is using proprietary magnetic beads with high binding capacity and selectivity for genomic DNA and can be applied on automated nucleic acid extraction instruments for high throughput processing.

Microbiome research has wide applications in agriculture, biofuel, ecology, environment remediation and healthcare. The characterization of soil and gut microbiome requires the extraction of genetic materials, but it is not an easy process as both sources have complex content which can hinder scientists from getting sufficient yield of DNA or DNA of high purity that can be used directly for downstream application.

“In the microbiome research, we understand that lack of consistency in DNA extraction process will hinder the accurate analysis of the microbial representation and the ability to compare results between studies.” explained Dr Wong Kak Ming, Research Scientist at MP Biomedicals.

Variability in results can stem from all the steps in the microbiome study process including sample preparation, DNA extraction, and downstream analyses. The development team at MP Biomedicals is focused on optimizing both the sample preparation and DNA extraction steps to ensure high quality and yield of DNA to advance the microbiome research.

MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations.
