Beckman Coulter Life Sciences continues to expand its range of Avanti High Performance centrifuges with the launch of the Avanti JXN-30. This capitalizes on the company’s unique expertise in ultracentrifugation by incorporating features from its top of the line Optima X Series into the High Performance Avanti JXN-30.

The new centrifuge improves workflow by delivering high throughput performance and an expanding and increasingly varied separations capability. This ranges from high efficiency, high volume separations using fixed angle rotors to high force zonal separations with swinging bucket rotors.

In addition, the MobileFuge remote application for Avanti JXN and Optima X series centrifuges enables customers to access all types of data, carrying out remote monitoring, control and error handling via networks and mobile devices. This application, available for both Apple® iOS and Android™ devices, has already attracted more than 700 downloads. Its data management capability combines with the network and MobileFuge applications to make the Avanti JXN series especially suitable for shared lab environments.

As Randy Pawlovich, Director of Product Management, Centrifugation and Tools, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, explained: “The Avanti JXN-30 enables academic researchers to benefit from the performance and versatility they would expect from ultracentrifuge technology, including high spin speeds, multi-language GUI, excellent data management, and networking. However, in today’s lab this has to be combined with biosafety features which improve the working environment. In addition, researchers are increasingly looking to data management technology to help them manage their workloads. This is particularly important in a shared laboratory where it is necessary to be able to account for costs, use of resources and supplies.”

Beckman Coulter centrifuges offer customers energy savings and environmental advantages. Recycled resin is incorporated in the outer paneling of the Avanti JXN-30, and each instrument contains up to 7.5 lbs (3.4kg) of recycled PET bottles. A Friction Reduction System (FRS) enables the Avanti JXN-30 to run more quietly, increasing energy efficiency by reducing the air in the chamber. This in turn reduces rotor friction, minimizing the effort required to accelerate and to maintain speed. The FRS also lowers the amount of heat present in the chamber, reducing refrigeration system usage.

The BioCertified** fixed-angle and swinging-bucket rotors offer a range of biosafety options including a BioCertified dual-locking lid configuration for workflows that include biohazardous samples. This maintains biocontainment when removing and transporting the rotor to a containment hood. Avanti JXN-30 rotors range in capacity from 360 mL to 4 L, and some are independently certified to contain liquids and aerosols.

The Avanti JXN-30 has redundant, built-in safety features to ensure that no individual rotor exceeds the maximum speed permitted. A lower work surface makes rotor handling easier with a foot pedal for hands-free lid opening. Large footpads allow the unit to be used unanchored. Interface options enable users to customize the touchscreen with pictures, backgrounds, avatars and sounds. An optional pharmaceutical grade sterilizing filter system, located on the unit exterior for ease of access, also enhances biosafety.

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences provides both face to face and remote support service for its Avanti High Performance Centrifugation Series which offers worldwide troubleshooting, and maintenance.

CentrifugesCentrifuges are used to separate particulates suspended in a liquid via the application of a centrifugal force including cells, macromolecules, nanoparticles and precipitates. Centrifuges come in three sizes: microcentrifuges, benchtop and floor-standing centrifuges, depending on the volume and number of samples that require separation. When choosing a centrifuge, consider its maximum separation power indicated by its relative centrifugal force (RCF) value. Low force centrifuges reach a maximum RCF of 8,000 g, high-force centrifuges can reach maximum RCF values of 80,000 g. For extremely high forces, consider ultracentrifuges (up to 800,000 g). Refrigerated and vacuum centrifuges also known as concentrators are available for more specialized applications. A range of volumes are available for centrifuge tubes and microfuge tubes, depending on sample sizes. This will prevent deterioration and cross contamination, and improve the accuracy of sample tracking procedures.Laboratory SafetyLaboratory safety is essential to the effective operation of all laboratories and is required to minimize the risk of harm during experiments. Guidelines, regulations, and equipment should be available in all laboratories to ensure that the working environment is safe and secure.
