Overcoming barriers to NHS new technology adoption
1 Oct 2025

David Wells, Chief Executive of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), introduces a collaborative report produced with Roche Diagnostics, and with the support of LabMed and RCPath. The report highlights the essential role of diagnostics in healthcare and the need for diagnostics professionals to be recognized as a core pillar of the system. Wells discusses the major challenges faced by laboratories, especially the difficulty in securing funding to move new diagnostic tests from pilot to national service. He emphasizes the need for greater system-wide understanding of the value of diagnostics, faster adoption of innovations, and stronger engagement with primary and community care. The report calls for increased funding, clearer budget structures, and a shift in government and ICB (Integrated Care Board) priorities to support prevention and community-based care, with diagnostics at the heart of this transformation.
