Thin Film Production of Plastic/Polymer Materials Using the Mini-Film Maker Accessory from Specac: Part 2 of 3

13 Jun 2016

The ATR technique is a surface measurement of a sample type with a typical penetration depth of ~2 microns into the sample surface using a diamond (or ZnSe) crystal, giving an effective pathlength measurement distance of ~4.5 microns for a single reflection event of the sample area under study. From an ATR measurement of a plastic/polymer type sample, the sensitivity of the measurement for the effective pathlength allowed may be insufficient to determine any specific sample constituents in the makeup of the polymer material that are present at a low concentration. Therefore it may be necessary to create a thin film of the plastic/polymer sample for transmission study from a suitable film making accessory such as the Specac Mini-Film Maker Kit as shown in this application note.

Mini-Film Maker Kit

Specac Ltd

The Specac Mini-Film Maker is designed to produce high-quality thin films of polymer and plastic materials for infrared transmission analysis. This product enables quick and easy hot pressing of samples at any temperature between ambient to 250°C, to give constant and reproducible thickness films over the range 50 to 500 microns with a formed diameter of 15mm. The Mini-Film Maker Kit includes the Mini-Film Maker Press with integrated heated platens and digital temperature controller, a Film Maker Assembly with Film Sizing Rings of 50, 100, 250 and 500 microns, 200 pairs of Aluminium Foil Discs, a Cooling Plate, a pack of 100 Specacards, and Stainless Steel Tweezers (Forceps). A set of US, EU and UK Power leads are provided as standard.
