Continuous and Precise Metering of Reactants and Solvents into Supercritical Water Gasification Using a Teledyne Isco Syringe Pump and Extractor

25 Nov 2014

Gasification of biomass involves thermal decomposition of organic components in the absence of oxygen. Supercritical water (SCW) is an excellent reaction media to gasify biomass. This note illustrates a compilation of several studies conducted with the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) apparatus. Teledyne Isco 260D syringe pumps are essential parts of the apparatus. They provide precise metering of a variety of high-pressure, ambient temperature fluids into the SCW environment at flow rates sufficient to create turbulent flow of supercritical fluid mixtures at elevated temperatures in the reactors.

Gas Generators and AnalyzersGas generators are used for supplying or monitoring a regular flow of a high purity gas such as nitrogen, hydrogen or zero air for applications such as gas chromatography. Gas analyzers can be used in supply chain processes and laboratory experiments with portable analyzers for monitoring CO2 and O2 levels as well as trace gases. Regular flow can be produced with gas control modules and flow meters. The pressures/vacuums generated are determined by the type of pump used. High vacuum pumps include diffusion, ion, roots and turbopumps; for primary/medium vacuum applications see rotary vane pumps, scroll & diaphragm pumps. For the positive displacement of liquids explore a range of syringe and peristaltic pumps, as well as fluid aspirators. This parallelization reduces the cost per experiment and increases reproducibility and output volume of data.
