Beginner's guide to CHO culture: Understanding batch, fed-batch, and perfusion bioprocesses
1 May 2023In this application note, Eppendorf explains the differences between batch, fed-batch, and perfusion cell culture bioprocesses using Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells at bench scale. The importance of tracking specific parameters is explained to achieve inoculation of bioreactors at high viability. The data obtained from sampling is discussed in terms of growth rate, production yields, and bioreactor feeding or perfusion rates. These principles may be applicable to other suspension cell culture processes at smaller or larger scales.

Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins.
