An Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Troponin I as a Biomarker of Drug-Induced Skeletal Muscle Toxicity

5 Nov 2012

Many drugs can induce skeletal muscle myotoxicity and creatine kinase (CK) is often used as a biomarker of myotoxicity. However, CK has been shown to be present in the heart, kidney and brain in addition to skeletal muscle, thus its presence in the blood cannot be completely attributed to skeletal muscle injury. Skeletal muscle troponin (sTnI) is a protein that is part of the contractile apparatus in the skeletal muscle cells and is released into the blood following damage specific to these cells. An ultrasensitive immunoassay to monitor the levels of sTnI in the blood has been developed by Singulex Inc. This scientific poster demonstrates several advantages of using sTnl as a biomarker of skeletal muscle injury including increased sensitivity and specificity compared to CK.

The use of biomarkers in research and diagnosis can indicate a normal or disease state or drug response of cells / tissues. Biomarkers include genetic markers, cell surface markers such as antigens, antibodies or receptors and secreted molecules such as cytokines. An assay system is required for identification of biomarkers. :Toxicology / Drugs of Abuse TestingToxicology and Drugs of Abuse Testing is the investigation into toxic and illegal substances found at the scene of a crime or from a suspect and / or victim associated with a scene of a crime. Analyzers, immunoassays and drugs of abuse test kits and presumptive test kits are an essential aspect of toxicology investigation.Drug DevelopmentDrug development refers to the process of bringing a new drug to market.Drug TestingIt is essential to test the efficacy and toxicity of drugs at every stage of their development to ensure that a pharmaceutical product is fit for purpose and safe for use before reaching the stage of mass production and distribution.Skeletal Muscle InjuryToxicityToxicity is defined as the degree to which a substance can harm humans or animals. It is essential to study the toxicity of pharmaceutical products during the development process so that optimum dosage can be established for the administration of the drug.Muscle
