Good, fast and reliable results so far.
Forensic drug analysis
We are currently evaluating the instrument to determine how we will utilize it. The most useful application for us right now seems to the determination of cocaine base vs. cocaine HCL. We were hoping that the TruNarc would help with the field testing for heroin, but this was not the case.

The global drug problem is increasing, with trafficking of meth, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, and emerging threats like dibutylone, fentanyl, U-47700, and W-18 impacting communities worldwide. Law enforcement officials need to quickly identify suspected narcotics in the field to help keep drugs, and drug dealers, off the streets.
Now with the expanded v1.6 library, the Thermo Scientific™ TruNarc™ Handheld Narcotics Analyzer enables officers, customs, border control and other personnel to scan more than 370 suspected illicit substances in a single, definitive test.
With the TruNarc Handheld Narcotics Analyzer, the accuracy and reliability of a narcotics lab are available anywhere you go. Narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens and analgesics are easily identified using lab-proven Raman spectroscopy.
- Single Test, Multiple Narcotics - Identifies dozens of narcotics in a single test, saving time and money.
- Easy to Use - A single test for multiple controlled substances provides clear, definitive results for presumptive identification with no user interpretation.
- Broad Analysis Capability - Analyze key drugs of abuse as well as common cutting agents, precursors and emerging threats such as fentanyl, synthetic cathinones (bath salts) and cannabinoids (Spice or K2).
- Non-destructive, Non-contact Sampling - Scan directly through plastic or glass for most samples to minimize contamination, reduce exposure and preserve evidence.
- Automated Data Storage and Report Generation - TruNarc Admin captures all scan and self check results to help support prosecution.

Improvements in Field Narcotics Identification Using Raman Spectroscopy
This white paper investigates the use of Thermo Scientific’s TruNarc analyzer, a handheld, field-based Raman instrument, to identify street samples of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. When analyzer results were compared against laboratory results for identification of the same drug samples, the analyzer retrieves 99% of the same results as laboratory testing and the other 1% of samples were inconclusive, therefore would normally be sent off for further laboratory testing. This article demonstrates that the TruNarc analyzer is reliable, as well as being handheld and easy to use.
10 Reasons Raman for Narcotics ID Strengthens Law Enforcements
A well-established technique for identifying chemicals, Raman spectroscopy has been used in forensic laboratory analysis for decades and has a proven track record in the United States court system. This poster gives ten benefits of using TruNarc™ Handheld Narcotics Analyzers for narcotic identification in law enforcement.
Identification of Synthetic Cathinones
Recent years have shown significant growth of street drugs collectively known as synthetic cathinones. The Thermo Scientific TruNarc™ Handheld Narcotics Analyzer is a handheld Raman spectrometer that can be used to identify a wide range of narcotics in the form of liquids, gels, pastes, and solid materials such as tablets and capsules directly at the point of need. This application note describes how the TruNarc™ Handheld Narcotics Analyzer can be used to identify synthetic cathinones.
TruNarc Strengthens Chain of Custody (CoC)
In police work, chain of custody (CoC) refers to chronological documentation of the seizure, transfer, analysis and disposition of physical or electronic evidence used in legal proceedings. In this article, Detective Brian Coen, of the Quincy (MA) Police Department, explains the role of the CoC in handling drug evidence and how Thermo Fisher Scientific’s TruNarc™ analyser can provide proper documentation in the CoC.
Deployment of TruNarc “like night and day” in prosecuting narcotics cases
This case study looks at how Thermo Fisher Scientific’s TruNarc analyser has been deployed by the Multi-County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Enforcement Unit in Missouri as a handheld narcotics identification tool. Jason Grellner, leader of the unit, reports overwhelming success using the instrument due to its ability to rapidly turn around results that are accepted at preliminary hearings in court.
Thermo Scientific TruNarc enables faster case adjudication and improves efficiency of prosecution
This case study looks at how the JSU Center for Applied Forensics trialled the use of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s TruNarc™ analyzer for identification of suspected controlled substances. Use of the TruNarc analyzer helped relieve the backlog of samples waiting to be tested by the state laboratory, increased the efficiency of persecution and made the process more cost effective.
Field-based narcotics ID enables speedy prosecution while saving valuable lab resources
This case study looks at how the Phoenix Police Department deployed TruNarc Analyzers in a pilot program for identification of narcotics. The results of the pilot study show that the use of TruNarc Analyzers in the police department allowed more drugs to be tested, reduced the cost of testing and reduced the number of samples sent to the Crime Lab, allowing the reallocation of resources for high priority cases.
The TruNarc Analyzer: non-invasive, handheld narcotics identification
Kirsten Barr discusses the Thermo Scientific TruNarc analyzer: a powerful, handheld narcotics lab which is capable of detecting narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens and analgesics using Raman spectroscopy.
