Eppendorf Filter Tips: Precision, Quality, and Reliability!

As a scientist, I have always held Eppendorf in high regard for their laboratory products, and their Filter Tips have only solidified this trust. These consumables are a critical component of our daily lab work, and I have been using them consistently for the past year. I must say that Eppendorf has once again exceeded my expectations with their Filter Tips. Precision and Accuracy (★★★★★) Eppendorf Filter Tips are synonymous with precision. When working with delicate samples and expensive reagents, accuracy is paramount. These tips consistently deliver impeccable precision, allowing me to confidently perform various liquid handling tasks with the utmost accuracy. Whether I'm pipetting microliter volumes or loading gels, these tips have consistently delivered consistent and reproducible results. Quality and Durability (★★★★★) The build quality of these tips is outstanding. They are sturdy and resistant to cracking or bending, even when used with high sample volumes. The smooth, hydrophobic surface ensures that no residual liquid is left behind, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and ensuring optimal sample recovery. The consistent, airtight seal between the tip and the pipette ensures that no precious samples are lost during aspiration or dispensing. Ergonomics and Compatibility (★★★★★) Eppendorf Filter Tips are designed with user comfort in mind. They fit snugly onto Eppendorf pipettes, and the graduated volume markings are clear and easy to read. The low attachment force minimizes the risk of tips coming off during pipetting, a problem that can be a significant headache in the lab. The compatibility with a wide range of pipettes also makes them versatile and suitable for various applications. Sterility and Contamination Control (★★★★★) Maintaining a sterile environment in the lab is non-negotiable, and Eppendorf Filter Tips excel in this aspect. They are supplied in sterile racks, and the filter barrier effectively prevents aerosol contamination, ensuring that samples remain pure and uncontaminated throughout pipetting. This feature is especially crucial when working with sensitive assays or cell cultures. Value for Money (★★★★☆) While Eppendorf Filter Tips are undoubtedly an investment, the quality and reliability they offer make them worth every penny. Although they are slightly more expensive than some alternatives, the peace of mind they provide in terms of accuracy, sterility, and durability makes them a wise choice for any laboratory.

There are certain situations in the lab in which suitable safety precautions must be taken in counteract any potential risks and to prevent any unpleasant surprises. It must be possible to anticipate in advance the dangers presented by carryover effects from radioactive, highly toxic or infectious sample material as well as the contamination risk caused by foreign DNA (e.g. as a result of aerosol formation).

Our ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. have an integrated dual filter made of pure hydrophobic polyethylene without "self-sealing" additives. This filter provides protection against carryover and contamination caused by aerosols and does not swell up as a result of incorrect pipetting. Samples can then be easily recovered. In line with the special biological purity requirements of a PCR application, ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. are "PCR clean", sterile (in accordance with USP, DAB and Ph.Eur.) and thus free of human DNA, DNase, RNase and PCR inhibitors.

The new Eppendorf ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. are the first filtertips with a two phase filter for contamination protection. The tips are manufactured to the highest possible quality from pure, non recycled materials under cleanroom conditions. The are characterized by defined flow dynamics, low wettability and high thermal stability. They are certified pyrogen free and PCR clean (free from human DNA, DNase, RNase and PCR-inhibiting substances).

The two-phases effect!

  • Two filter layers provide dual protection for pipette and sample
  • Two filter layers provide dual protection from aerosols and biomolocules
  • Free from PCR inhibitor additives
  • Patent pending technology
  • All tips are provided sterile, Eppendorf PCR clean and pyrogen-free
  • Batch certified
  • ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. contains well-defined different pore sizes within the two filter layers. The white layer which faces the sample retains drops, splashes and aerosols. the blue layer above it forms a highly-effective double barrier, that reliably binds even biomolecules.

Even more, ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. are characterized by:
  • Defined flow dynamics
  • Low wettability
  • High thermal stability
  • Leak proof seal*
  • Minimum attachment and ejection forces*
*when used in combination with Eppendorf pipettes

Reliable protection against pipetting-related bio-aerosol contamination

The formation of aerosols during pipetting with air cushion pipettes is a major contamination risk in laboratories, potentially compromising results. Tests with DNA, viruses, mycoplasma, and bacteria confirmed aerosol generation and contamination of pipette components during regular pipetting. Find out how ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S.® and ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. SealMax® prevent aerosol infiltration, ensuring contamination-free pipetting, underlining the critical role of high-quality filter pipette tips for reliable and reproducible outcomes.

The Tip of the Iceberg: How Pipette Tips Influence Results

This application note demonstrates the influence of pipette tip quality in the production of accurate pipetting results. The standard ISO 8655:2002 recommends using pipettes and tips from the same supplier, but as pipette tips are only consumables, they are not usually selected with quality in mind. As a result, consumables can have a direct impact on the quality of results. Problems with analysis results are usually linked to reagents, method and pipette but not to the pipette's consumable for example. Eppendorf standard tips have been shown to perform within permissible error tolerances regardless of the calibration method or autoclaving. Here, the user is free to choose the method most suitable for his application.

ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. SealMax – Determination of Sample Recovery Rate of Self-Sealing Filter Tips in Case of Over-Pipetting

An investigation was carried out to determine the sample recovery rate of self-sealing filter tips following over-pipetting. Results show that nearly complete sample recovery is achievable using ep Dualfilter T.I.P.S. SealMax. It has the highest recovery rate and reproducibility irrespective of the filter tip size when compared with two other manufacturers of self-sealing filter tips.

Amplification and Detection of Foreign DNA

Food & beverage labs often need to verify the absence of foreign DNA (bacteria, GMO, etc.) in food samples. In this workflow, the step of amplification and detection of the DNA is crucial. Watch this video to discover how to get correct results quickly to detect foreign DNA.
