A system that can be very efficient but some parts need to be improved.

"This device makes it possible to eliminate the operator effect on the measurement which is a significant gain. It allows us to reach extremely low concentrations which is a strong asset. We are quantifying halogens in different matrices and so far the results are promising. We use the device non-stop, which allows us to take a large number of samples, but we have noticed mechanical problems with the autosampler or the 10-way valve (perhaps there are parts that need to be repaired or changed during maintenance). The problems have been solved thanks to Metrohm France's after sales service. One area for improvement would be to be able to quantify nitrate and nitrite ions via combustion."

"Results obtained with CIC are accurate and precise. Only milli-q water required for analysis so it's environmental friendly and cost effective. Quick analysis, no sample preparation required. Very rare that maintenance is required, and also very quick support from service person."

"The analytical technique is effective for our applications; in particular in the determination of levoglucosane which, according to the literature, it is not easy to obtain adequate resolutions on environmental samples if adequate products are not available; Metrohm's service is always punctual and attentive, the operators kind and prepared. However, some instrument care is required to maintain the stability of the chromatogram."

"We have done an upgrade of our current IC 940. This enables us to independently run two different methods, using two different eluents, columns, temperatures, flows and sample dilutions. Moreover, digestion by pyrolysis is superior to offline digestion methods with regard to sample throughput and precision and correctness of results.

CIC is ideal for routine analysis in a variety of fields, as it neither prior knowledge about the sample matrix nor complicated method development are required. CIC is recommended for quality control of raw materials, intermediates and finished products, and is also suitable for straightforward monitoring of compliance with the relevant laws and standards in the environmental field (e.g. DIN EN 228, IEC 60502-1, RoHS, WEEE, ...). Thus, CIC enables determination of halogens and sulfur in all kinds of fuels, lubricants, additives and other petroleum products, as well as in polymers, flame retardants, textiles, special chemicals, catalysts and all kinds of waste.

The new CIC system consists of a Combustion Module from Analytik Jena and an absorption and IC part from Metrohm. Sample digestion is controlled automatically by a flame sensor. The flame sensor measures the light from the pyrolysis oven and controls the feed rate of the sample boat into the oven in proportion to the intensity of the light emitted during combustion. Thus, duration of the combustion is optimized so that combustion of the sample is always complete (soot prevention), while time consuming delays of throughput are avoided.

Thanks to the automated control of the sample digestion, method development for combustion is no longer needed; both different matrices and different sample quantities can be treated using the same, universal «method».


The complete system, including sample delivery, sample digestion and analysis, is controlled by MagIC Net™, the proven software for ion chromatography.
