8697 Headspace Sampler
Based on the flagship Agilent 8890 GC and 7697A headspace sampler, the Agilent 8697 headspace sampler is the first Agilent headspace sampler with integrated GC communication. That means you can manage your GC workflows from a single interface and spend more time on what matters.
With the 8697 Headspace Sampler, you get the results you need when and where you need them. Designed with advanced hardware features, such as the microchannel-based EPC module with atmospheric pressure compensation and valve-based sampling, the 8697 delivers unprecedented precision and performance. These features combine with the integrated intelligence found in Agilent 8890, 8860, and Intuvo 9000 GCs, plus remote accessibility through the browser interface of those systems. That means you can get instrument status updates wherever you are, inside or outside the lab.
Features
- Easily view status details on the GC touchscreen and browser interface
- Isolated carrier flow path as in the 7697A headspace sampler to safely vent your vials
- Improved transfer line with a captive septum retainer nut and improved inlet bracket for a more secure connection
- Optimized sample overlap lets you simultaneously heat and shake up to 12 vials
- Supports 10, 20, or 22-mL vials with no limitations on running mixed vial sizes
- Accommodates up to 48 sample vials, over two removable racks
- Removable sample racks can be exchanged while the headspace sampler is operating so you can add samples as the sequence is running
- Easily prepare samples in removable racks for improved workflow optimization
- Streamlined sample tracking with optional barcode reader
- Smart park button and tray rack LEDs show the status of the headspace sampler
Brochures
Intelligent performance for a smoother GC workflow

Residual solvents analysis for the pharmaceutical industry using the Agilent 8697 Headspace Sampler and 8850 GC-FID system
Residual solvents left behind during API manufacturing pose a regulatory challenge for pharmaceutical producers, requiring precise monitoring to ensure product safety and compliance with USP <467> standards.
Discover how a headspace GC system delivers reliable detection, resolution, and quantitation of residual solvents using helium and hydrogen carrier gases, supporting accurate screening and limit testing in pharmaceutical workflows.
Volatile organic compounds analysis in drinking water with headspace GC/MSD using hydrogen carrier gas and HydroInert source
Recent concerns with the price and availability of helium have led laboratories to look for alternative carrier gases, such as hydrogen, for their GC/MS methods. Agilent Technologies explains how HydroInert, a new EI source for GC/MS and GC/MS/MS, was developed, and optimized for use with hydrogen carrier gas, and describes how the system can be used to analyze volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water.
Residual solvents analysis using an Agilent Intuvo 9000 GC with 8697 headspace sampler
In this application note, residual solvent analysis was performed on an Agilent 8697 headspace sampler with the Agilent Intuvo 9000 gas chromatograph (GC). The Intuvo 9000 GC was equipped with dual columns and dual flame ionization detectors (FID) using the D2 accessory for the second FID.
