Total Organic Carbon analyzer utilizes a catalytic oxidation combustion technique at high temperatures (the temperature raises up to 720 ºC). The CO2 generated by oxidation is measured with a Non-dispersive Infra-Red (NDIR) sensor. This equipment is the best choice equipment for the qualitative/quantitative analysis of water, protein, carbohydrate, hemoglobin etc, especially in the medical device industry. It was chosen as we used it before for the analysis of traces of plastics according to USP 661. The TOC-L is quite intuitive. This helps for the wide span of users we have, from undergraduate researchers to PhDs. The instrument can be operated with or without a PC if benchspace is crucial. The manual is one of the most informative that I have come across. About 1/3 of it is explanation of operation and theory. Standard solution prep is also outlined well. It serves as a great reference. Shimadzu’s history with this instrument means that there are many service personnel well trained in its operation and repair.

It features automatic sample acidification and sparging, as well as an automatic dilution function that reduces sample salinity, acidity and alkalinity. This significantly extends the use of catalysts and combustion tubes.
The TOC-L Series features variable syringe sizes when the sample volume is limited. High-precision mass flow controllers ensure uninterrupted carrier gas for accurate analysis. A zero-maintenance Peltier cooler used for maximum water vapor removal ensures accurate analysis. In addition, an on-board air purifier may eliminate the need for high-purity air during testing.

The optional salt kits permit 12 times more salt to be analyzed before maintenance is required. The ASI-L autosampler can use three different vial sizes for various applications, while the smaller OCT-L autosampler can use any vial size for up to 8 or 16 samples. TOC-L models can accept particulates up to 500 microns or 800 microns with the optional particulate kit. For larger particles, solids, soils and sludge, the SSM-5000 is the ideal solution. The TNM-L can be added for simultaneous TOC and Total Nitrogen analyses without increasing the size of the footprint.

For pollution control of the ocean and in the research of the ocean environment, the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) is regarded as an important index of organic contaminants contained in seawater. At the same time, the measurement of total nitrogen (TN), which is known to cause eutrophication, is also attracting attention for environmental pollution control and in ecological research. Seawater has an NaCl content of approx. 3.5 %.

TOC System Suitability Test for Sterile Water

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) specifies that total organic carbon (TOC) content be used for management of organic impurity values permitted in bulk purified water, water for injection, in addition to sterile purified water and sterile water for injection. According to USP, TOC analyzers to be used for sterile water must satisfy the TOC system suitability test using test water having a carbon content of 8.0 mg/L, and must also be able to detect TOC at 0.1 mg/L or less.

This whitepaper describes a new ASTM method for the determination of nitrogen levels in water samples using high temperature catalytic oxidation on a total organic carbon analyzer. ASTM D8083-16 is a new method for the determination of total nitrogen, and TKN by calculation, in water samples. The method compares favorably with the current EPA approved calculated total nitrogen in samples without interferences. ASTM D8083-16 saves laboratories time, uses less reagent and smaller sample volumes, and overcomes several known issues with current TKN and TN methods.
