Explore the latest analytical research and techniques here

Thousands of scientists from across the world have joined leading manufacturers online to explore the important developments in analytical science and drive forward research.

The successful Virtual Analytical Summit 2021 showcased the most exciting innovations and hottest topics spanning the fields of food security, materials science, life sciences, pharma and biopharma, and more.

First launched a year ago, the SelectScience® Virtual Summits offer a crucial platform for the science industry to continue to connect at this critical time, featuring eminent speakers, technology workshops, interactive resource hubs from leading brands and dedicated networking sessions.

Explaining the significance of these online events, Summit speaker Prof. Tim Long, Virginia Tech, said: “We don’t want this pandemic to slow down the advancement of science. These virtual conversations will advance our field, nurture partnerships between people and accelerate research and discovery.”

A total of 24 compelling presentations over two packed days drew the crowds, while the three themed networking sessions again proved a hit, as did the new product launch zone.

Just a few of the talks available to watch on demand include:

SelectScience CEO Kerry Parker said: “It’s been fantastic to be able to offer a platform to these speakers right at the forefront of their fields and we would like to thank them all for taking the time to share their work with our audience.”

A number of leading manufacturers presented their latest technologies available in the field, including Agilent Technologies, Sartorius, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Pfeiffer Vacuum GmbH, Bruker Optics, Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc. (ACD/Labs), Gyros Protein Technologies, Malvern Panalytical, WITec GmbH and MOBILion Systems. All presentations are now available on demand.

Live Q&A sessions were a big hit and provided two-way communication between visitors, speakers, and manufacturers, allowing for valuable insights into the biopharma community.

Attendees were able to collect a virtual swag bag of useful resources completely free of charge. Featured highlights from the summit include:

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. For more specialized HPLC, explore FPLC, countercurrent LC and simulated moving bed systems. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Food and Beverage AnalyzersFood and Beverage Analyzers are commonly used to provide information about the chemical composition, structure and physical properties of food materials.Food and Beverage ProcessingFood and Beverage Processing involves the preparation of food products for further analysis. Typical instrumentation includes blanchers, color sorters, cookers, grinders, and refrigeration. These are used to replicate the processes commonly used in the commercial preparation of food and beverages.AntibodiesAntibodies are used in techniques such as confocal and fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT, immunohistochemistry, western blotting and immunopreciptation. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.Sample PreparationSample preparation can improve the quality and speed of separation techniques. Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.MetabolitesMetabolites are the intermediate and end products of metabolism. Analyzing metabolites offers insight into cellular processes and disease mechanisms and is critical in fields like pharmacology, toxicology, and diagnostics. Effective method development ensures optimization, quality control and cost effectiveness.Food SafetyFood safety describes the prevention of food-borne illnesses. Contamination with a variety of pathogens can be prevented with adequate temperature control, hygiene and labeling. Food samples can be tested using GC/MS, HPLC, SPE, and qPCR to ensure their adherence to regulations.Food TestingFood testing refers to a variety experiments including PCR, mass spectrometry, processing, QuEChERS, analyzing and Kjeldahl.Food FraudFood adulteration refers to food when it has been has been altered unlawfully with the addition of another lower commodity food product to increase quantity. The 2013 European horsemeat scandal saw the adulteration of beef products with the addition of horse meat.HPLCHigh-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a technique for separating, identifying, and quantifying components in mixtures. It is widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental analysis to ensure purity and identify unknown compounds.
