Product news

Phenomenex Inc., a global leader in the manufacture and research of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, introduces its second solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent - Strata-X-Drug N, specially designed for the extraction of drugs of abuse in forensic toxicology. The new sorbent targets neutral drugs such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines. Similar to its counterpart for basic drug of abuse testing, Strata-X-Drug B, the new sorbent saves time and reduces solvent expense due to it requiring no conditioning or equilibration.

Stringent QC tests on Strata-X-Drug N products are carried out by Phenomenex; each batch is tested by extracting lorazepam and temazepam from actual urine samples, which delivers more realistic results than testing from spiked water. Samples prepared using Strata-X-Drug N are ready for LC or GC analysis, and methods are available using Phenomenex Kinetex® (LC) and Zebron® (GC) columns.

“Our QC processes use biological samples to ensure the sorbent will perform as expected in customer analyses,” explained Erica Pike, brand manager for Phenomenex. “User satisfaction and consumer adoption has been very high with Strata-X-Drug B, so we have no doubt that Strata-X-Drug N will follow suit.”

Strata-X-Drug N is offered in 1, 3, 6 and 12 mL SPE tubes and in 96-well plates. Additional information featuring the Strata-X-Drug SPE product family can be accessed via the company article page on the right.

Strata-X-Drug Solid Phase Extraction

Phenomenex Inc

Strata-X Drug B and N Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) sorbents are designed and quality control tested for basic and neutral drugs of abuse analysis, respectively. The sorbents are QC tested using drug probes from urine samples so that you can have confidence in your results. The sorbents also do not require conditioning/equilibrating steps, saving both time and solvent.

Solid-Phase ExtractionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for clean-up, extraction and concentration of semi-volatile or non-volatile analytes from complex mixtures including blood, urine and food samples. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. TLC plates come in multiple sizes with common adsorbent layers being silica, aluminum oxide or cellulose and high-performance (HP-TLC) plates are also available for increased sensitivity. Other equipment needed includes TLC developing chambers, applicators, TLC sprayers and visualizing devices, such as a viewing cabinet and UV lamp. Analyzers, immunoassays and drugs of abuse test kits and presumptive test kits are an essential aspect of toxicology investigation.GC-MS GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) instruments and equipment are used to separate, quantify and identify mixtures of small and volatile compounds, such as polycyclic aromatics, fatty acids and alcohols. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis.
