Beyond the bench and forward again: A biomedical scientist’s evolving perspective

As part of Lab Professionals Week, Aida Noor shares what it means to build a biomedical science career beyond the bench

19 Apr 2026

Lab Professionals Week is always a meaningful time for reflection. It reminds us not only of the essential work laboratory professionals do every day, but also of the many ways our roles continue to evolve.

Last year, I shared my journey beyond the bench — a story shaped by determination, curiosity, and a desire to create opportunities for others navigating careers in biomedical science. Since then, my perspective has deepened even further.

Over the past year, I have spent time supporting students, creating educational content, speaking at universities, and contributing to conversations about the future of scientific careers. That experience reinforced something important: biomedical scientists today are contributing far beyond traditional expectations of the profession.

We are educators, communicators, innovators, mentors, leaders and increasingly, we are helping shape how the next generation understands what is possible within laboratory medicine.

Spending time reflecting on the profession from this wider perspective has strengthened my appreciation for the laboratory itself. I see the bench not as a boundary, but as a foundation — a place where scientific curiosity, technical excellence, and patient impact come together. It remains one of the most meaningful environments in healthcare.

To all laboratory professionals — whether you are just starting your journey or have years of experience behind you — your work matters more than ever.

At the same time, biomedical science is continuing to change. Advances in automation, digital diagnostics, and artificial intelligence are transforming how laboratories operate and how scientists contribute. These developments are not replacing scientists — they are expanding the scope of what our roles can become.

This creates exciting opportunities for laboratory professionals to engage not only in diagnostics, but also in education, research, communication, and leadership across the wider scientific community.

Through my platform Biomedical Science and Beyond, I continue to support aspiring and practising scientists who are exploring these possibilities. Many students today are searching not just for jobs, but for direction and purpose within their careers. Lab Week is a reminder that their future in laboratory medicine can take many forms.

To all laboratory professionals — whether you are just starting your journey or have years of experience behind you — your work matters more than ever.

You are not only supporting diagnostics.

You are helping shape the future of healthcare.

And your contribution deserves to be recognised and celebrated.
