Simple Quality Control Qualification of FD&C Colors from Sport Drinks and Fruit Juice Beverages using Automated Solid Phase Extraction and Portable Spectrometer

19 Dec 2014

In this application note, automated solid phase extraction using the SmartPrep Extractor is shown to be an efficient method for the isolation and purification of FD&C colors for rapid quality control analysis. Qualitative verification was accurately and simply performed following purification using a portable spectrometer to confirm presence of FD&C Yellow No. 5 and FD&C Blue No. 1 in beverage samples.

Solid-Phase ExtractionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for clean-up, extraction and concentration of semi-volatile or non-volatile analytes from complex mixtures including blood, urine and food samples. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats.
