Removing the Challenges of Aflatoxin Food Safety Testing by Implementing a Simple Sample Matrix Preparation
16 Jan 2015Aflatoxin testing of consumer food products has become increasingly important as global food trade continues to rise, generating the need to identify levels of this mycotoxin quickly and accurately. Multiple AOAC methods exist for aflatoxinB1, B2, G1, G2 testing. Each method uses different sample preparation and analysis procedures for a variety of food products and matrices and creates a challenging environment for the typical food safety laboratory handling a diverse mix of food samples. In this poster, a common and more streamlined sample preparation method was developed to use as a simple roadmap for a wide range of food matrices.

Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems. Accessories in sample management include barcode scanners, heat sealers and tubes.Solid-Phase ExtractionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for clean-up, extraction and concentration of semi-volatile or non-volatile analytes from complex mixtures including blood, urine and food samples. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. Find the best SPE, SLE and SPME equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.MycotoxinsToxic chemicals such as Aflatoxin and Alkaloids that are produced by fungi are known as mycotoxins. In humid conditions, fungi can proliferate and colonize on crops to levels that can be damaging to human health. Food TestingFood testing refers to a variety experiments including PCR, mass spectrometry, processing, QuEChERS, analyzing and Kjeldahl.
