Real Time Monitoring of VOCs and Inorganic Compounds by Ion – Molecule Reaction Mass Spectrometry: Technology and Applications

8 May 2013

The analysis of VOCs and inorganic gaseous pollutants is a major demand in understanding air quality resp. pollution by hazardous compounds. Current reference methods are mainly offline methods that allow the interpretation of environmental conditions as averages over hours, days or even longer periods. This scientific poster demonstrates how IMR - MS, a multi-component gas analyzer, can be used for the real time analysis of volatile organic and inorganic compounds in environmental monitoring.

Gas Generators and AnalyzersGas generators are used for supplying or monitoring a regular flow of a high purity gas such as nitrogen, hydrogen or zero air for applications such as gas chromatography. Gas analyzers can be used in supply chain processes and laboratory experiments with portable analyzers for monitoring CO2 and O2 levels as well as trace gases. Regular flow can be produced with gas control modules and flow meters. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that have a low boiling point. Some VOCs are harmful to human health, whereas others can be used to determine the shelf-life of foods samples. Semi Volatile Organic CompoundsSemi volatiles organic compounds (SVOCs) are a groups of compounds that have a low boiling point and evaporate above room temperature. SVOCs include phenols and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).VolatilesVolatiles are a group of compounds that have a low boiling point and evaporate at room temperature. Volatiles, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can be used to determine shelf-life of food samples. GC-MS is typically used to analyze volatiles.Airborne PollutantsAirborne pollutants are particulates, biological molecules or other harmful materials that exist in the atmosphere. These pollutants are known to cause harm to health and the environment. Examples include persistent organic pollutants (POPs), carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides.Environmental ContaminationContaminants in the environment are harmful chemicals that are present in the air, land and water. These include pesticides, pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and many more.
