Morphological Comparison of Caco-2 Cells in the Corning® BioCoat™ Intestinal Epithelial Cell Environment and the Traditional 21-day Caco-2 Culture System

This application note qualitatively assesses ultrastructural characteristics of a differentiated monolayer of Caco-2 cells using transmission electron microscopy for the comparison of Caco-2 cells cultured in the conventional 21-day system with Caco-2 cells cultured in the Corning BioCoat Intestinal Epithelial Cell Environment. Caco-2 cells have been utilized in tissue culture to study compound transport and there has recently been an increased interest in utilizing the Caco-2 cell line as an in vitro model for screening drug candidates for their intestinal absorption potential.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. It is essential for tissue development, wound healing, and cancer research. Understanding and controlling cell growth is a fundamental part of cell biology and regenerative medicine.
