Determination of Cholesterol Level in Human Serum - Enzymatic Colorimetric Method

Determination of Cholesterol Level in Human Serum - Enzymatic Colorimetric Method

5 Jan 2016

Clinical chemistry uses chemical processes to measure levels of chemical components in the blood. It is very useful for the early diagnostic of disease and for monitoring organ function. The most common specimens used in clinical chemistry are blood and urine. In this application note, the cholesterol level in human serum was determined by the enzymatic method using the LAMBDA™ 465 UV/ Vis Spectrophotometer and UV Lab™ software.

UV-Visible SpectroscopyUltraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometers are used to measure the interaction of UV and visible light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance & absorbance. The two major instrument classes are single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. More specialized equipment includes colorimeters, spectroradiometers and refractometers. Portable and microvolume spectrophotometers are also available. For the modular spectroscopy lab, explore a range of light sources for combination with a spectrograph/spectrometer and optics. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.EnzymesEnzymes are macromolecular biological catalysts used across life science, pharmaceutical and clinical research. Various enzymes can be purchased for research applications including ligases, high fidelity polymerases, nuclease, protease, restriction enzymes, tissue dissociation enzymes and enzyme inhibitors. Blood samples can be tested for a number of different reasons such as diagnosis, glucose levels, cholesterol and drug testing.Human SerumHuman serum is found in blood plasma. The protein is used in a variety of applications including tissue engineering, transplantation and cell therapy.Colorimetric AssaysUrineThe analysis of urine is important in medicinal, anti-doping, forensic and life sciences applications. The ability to evaluate what someone has ingested through their urine enables fast detection and diagnosis of certain illnesses.
